Stupid question but still needs an answer

I have a question. Are the BIF's that you see in the review panel or battle icon (LBM, sorry) also used to provide the textures for your unit on the battlefield as well as it's coordinates for animation?

Duke John, I read your post on unit graphics in the Repository, but I'm still confused as to how to make them. Can you maybe provide me with a step-by-step walkthrough, maybe a simple example of something you've done? I'd greatly appreciate it.
