Troops can be captured in a battle. In the actual fight they are represented as dead, but afterwards you can ransom or kill them. Generals can also be captured. In Medieval you could either ransom or kill THEM too, and these options at least will be in Rome, but it is an intriguing possibility that in Rome you may be able to say "give me that city or I'll kill him!" I hadn't thought of that previously, but now that you brought it to my attention, I really hope it is in there.
Rescue missions, I think, will be out. In the real time sense, that is. You may be able to instruct a spy to do it, but even this I doubt.

I agree. Another good thing would be to be able to decide to kill the general but keep the captured soldiers.Because usually when i capture soldiers i prefer to ransom them. But if Ive captured a king I prefer to kill him.
~:dizzy: So he can't fight me again.(say if he was a realy good general or he had no heirs)

I find that when I capture the King the ransom is often so high that it is refused and you kill him anyways. You may get away with a king's ransom once, but if you've been at war with the faction for a while I doubt it. (I usually prefer the money, then try to pursue the war and kill him the second time.)

A faction will always pay the King's ransom if they don't have a heir to take his place (or if you have captured that heir too). Katank has based a Turkish strategy on isolating and ransoming the Egyptian Sultan several times by taking Tripoli.
But a ransomed King gains a 'captured vice' which lowers command but seriously increases morale, so be aware: he and his men will be less likely to rout next time.

About killing the general but leaving the troops: what you don't realize is that killing prisoners was frowned upon in the middle ages just as much as it is today. Prisoners were the property of their capturer, to whom they would swear that they would not escape, and in exchange their capturer would spare their lives and randsom them. Killing them was not only breach of oath, but stealing from your men as well. Especially the general, since he was worth most.

Thanks, Ludens - I've been perplexed about that for a while. Another mystery solved!
