Can somebody please enlighten me to exactly what these thing does? They probably say in the tutorial or battle hints, but I never observed it and have little patience to play through them all looking for that single tidbit.

Anyways, so does it set the unit in a defensive stance that makes him tougher, or does it just sort of mean "hold ground" (guard this spot)?

Its like 'Hold Position' in MTW. Units will supposedly not chase from the spot you tell them to hold. They still do a bit of course.

yes i never used it but belive that is what it is aswell. they will chase only a few feet, yards or whatever after a fleeing unit, then return and re-form on the spot u told them to defend.

I have to see that yet, my Phalanx always follow the routing enemies moving sideways and they don´t seem to stop, it would be better if a phalanx wouldn´t follow them one feet and hold the formation, but maybe it´s only the phalanx.

It also helps beef up the defence a bit, when I tell the Phoeni infantry or Barbarians Mercinaries to do this, them seem to hold there ground better against more waves of troops and moral breakers.

Although I havent tested it I do think it adds to defense a bit. So its a combination of hold formation and hold postion. Less to worry about with just one order ~:)

they seem to return to the location from which they started when the order was given, even if selected to attack and have moved some distance from that spot.....different from hold position, and maybe a tiny improvedment from MTW (still so much we dont have)..
