View Full Version : Unable to build gunpowder based artillery?
I am sorry if I have missed some basic thing and this question sounds silly, but I cant seem to be able to build cannons, although I have built a Bell Foundry. I have picked up Medieval after couple of years and remember well how my artillery smashed unbelievers and was looking forward to bombing fun again.
According to data sheet that came with my copy of the game, i should be able to build mortars and bombards with Bell Foundry, however, there is no such thing in units screen ~:mecry:
Am I missing something and some other structures need to be built first? or is it a glitch, and i should try reinstalling the game? I`ve patched version 1.1 of M:TW.

Are you sure your unit data sheet isn't corrupted?
And what faction are you using? and what about your province?
By data sheet I meant that printed list that comes with the game and shows aviable structures and units and necessary "ingredients" for each of them. I assume its the same for everybody?
I`m playing for Italians, first choosing early era and second time choosing High era (for Italians as well). I`ve built Bell Foundry and Cannon Foundry in Venice by now, but no luck with the units themselves. After posting, I found out that gunsmith units dont show up as well. Maybe province needs a certain resource? Like salpetre or something?
I haven't played Medieval for a while (still got some saves left to finish ~:p ) so I might be wrong. I think you can only get canons in late period? Also you can't built firearms until the game announces that gunpowder has been discovered.
I though that in vanilla MTW there was a bug that you couldn't build gunpowder units until late, even though you could build their requirements in high, but I am not 100% sure about that.

Don't know if its a bug, but yes, you need to wait for late period to be able to build them. Which means you probably have to wait about 50 years or so (if you built the foundries right after gunpowder was invented)
I don't know if this is also so with Viking Invasion, since I installed that only recently.

Ah, thanks. It seems that its a bug, yes, as it doesnt seem logical to build Cannon Foundry just because its cool and then wait for decades just to be able to build cannons themselves.
Thanks for your replies, everyone.
Just out of curiousity - is there are homemade fix for this? because it seems that oficially i`ve patched MTW to the max with the 1.1 (at least i dont see any other official patches)
Also, what is the "standard" version for online play? I dont have Vikings Invasion, just MTW1.1 After tinkering with the game after all this time, i kind of feel tempted to try out backstabbing some human opponent :)

Well there are several late units in fact that you can't build until that era, but can build the buildings for... like gothhic stuff I think... So it wouldn't be that different from normal units, except that there is an extra message saying 'gunpowder invented!' so you know you can start make the buildings.
As for the online play, I don't know. Haven't played online yet (need to make my skills a bit better before trying that ;)).
I'd assume the host can choose the settings though (like in which era the game is played)

There is only one type of online play. Its just like a costum battle, with one host choosing the settings like money and map.
For the first time I recommand a team battle and just ask allot from your team players. Have fun!
Thanks for responses, guys. Somewhen after AD1300 I was able finally build gunpowder units, yay! :)
I`ll definetly check out the multiplayer part, just to understand how bad I am in this game, hehe.
Its kind of bummer that there isnt a strategic part to multiplayer as well, though. I understand that i could be time eater and lots of waiting would be involved, but I wouldnt mind all that provided I played with bunch of good pals who do not bicker about such stuff.
