Players start off as one of three Roman factions, which are quite limited compared to the array of factions available in the previous two games, though when a faction is defeated, you gain the ability to play as that faction in the next campaign

How long before that switch gets bypassed...

But on a good campaign you should be able to defeat quite a few of the factions... does that switch only get turned on if you beat them and win the campaign? ~

I hope it's not so as depicted in the review.
In the first place I wanted to play one of the babarian factions when I get the game. Then I read that you have to finish the roman campaign first in order to play the other factions.
But to have to defeat every faction as the romans to play this faction sounds not so good ~ .

Looks like The Wargamer now has a microsite for RTW too.

Here is a funny quote from the preview:

"However when you become too strong, and this is the bit that will ensure the game keeps you on the seat of your pants (my italics) well past the mid-point,..." ~D

At the dot com (uuggghhh I feel cheapened just saying its name) there is a thread somewhere (I think it is stickied) with a post by a CA guy that says if you conquer a faction as the Romans, you can stop the Roman game in progress and play the conquered faction. BUT, if you win the whole campaign as the Romans, ALL factions get unlocked. Hope this clears things up for everyone ~

EDIT - nope, its not stickied, but its there somewhere. I dont know if you can do a search for posts by name though, it wasn't MikeB that posted it but some name like Flaminius something or other. Def. a CA guy though.

Seek and ye shall find:

To clarify:

Destroy a faction and you can play it.

Win a campaign as the Romans and you can play with all the playable factions.

Hope this helps.

In 90 days a new thread will be started:

I beat the game two weeks ago, my new campaign as the Selucids was amazing... until my computer crashed and my harddrive melted! I installed the game again but I now am told I need to beat the game again? WTF? Is there any way I can start as the Selucids without having to beat the campaign as the Romans again?

Another case for the modders.

probably just a text file somewhere with the factions and if they are enabled.

Turn all on ~D ~;)

It doesn't really require any modding i guess, its probably in one of the text files where you have to put TRUE or FALSE in them to unlock the factions.

EDIT: doh ~:dizzy: Shadespanther beat me to it :tomato:

Last time I unlocked a faction it was the Munich 1860 team in Pro Evolution... I wonder, would they be a specific unit under the mantle of the German faction, or would they be considered Barbarian Mercenaries? ~D

By golly, I want my footy on the battlefield!

i must say that this is a really dumb idea. it spoils the maturity of the game. it's very juvenile and console/arcade-like.

I hope it's easy to play as the unplayable factions...
edit: Err, I meant mod it so I can play as the Scythians, whatever.

faisal: mwhahaahahaha 1 min ~:p

It does sort of cheapen it and makes it seem arcadey.

a scenario.

"I win the game, I unlocked all the secret factions. I rule!!!!!" ~

Sadly I reformat my hard drive every 3 months, so that means I will have to find an easy way to mod it. WP CA ~

WTF????!!!!

The factions are LOCKED? Jaw drops! I suppose I'll just mod around it. If that can't be done, I'm sure as hell not buying this game. Period.

Who needs that kind of juvenile crap??!!

~

I don't want some company telling me what campaigns to run. If there X playable factions I want to be able to friggin' try them out from the start!!!!Why would they put in such an idiotic feature? Did someone dose their tea over there?

Honestly, I can't imagine what CA was thinking on this one.

Does remind of some of my six-year-old's gameboy games, now that I think about it. Or are those my five-year-old's games? Is there any other computer strategy game that makes you unlock factions? Imagine if Civ did that - ~:joker: Maybe they can do it in Civ IV. ~:joker:

It's like an old racing game, beat the better car and win it...

How to solve it if a mod cant, fairly simple. You just start a campaign and play it untill one turn before you win the game. Then you save. And share your save game, all others have to do is simply press end-turn and auto calc. and wupti, you win.

Good preview. I liked the info that armies on the strategic map had "movement points". I was afraid it was going to be real time.

It shows once more which audience is targeted with RTW.

I think this is a reosanable compromise between manstream and hardcore. CA was able to limit their efforts to provide a mainstream player an easy start by concentrating on Roma Campaign, instead of tuning every fraction. For a mainstream RTS player starting Total War series poses significant challenge, it is reasonable that CA limited player's freedom at the beginning, given that experienced ones have an easy option of unlocking whole range

I cant imagine what is getting into their heads at CA. They make the move from the simple 'risk board' toward the more complex civ-type strategic map which wont attract hardcore RTS players. On the other hand they limit what faction we can use (how RTS is that) which wont attract civ players and irritates total war players.

I fined it reather galling that I must play (and win) as Rome, I really only want to play aginst Rome so I can smash them properly. I must rely on the more capable computer people to fined a way arround this.

When I heard this news a while back I was completely disappointed, I had intended to give SP campaign a real shot with RTW, I found MTW got repetitive and only ever finished one campaign... and that was modded. I wanted to campaign against the Romans too. How many other stupid surprises are due before this game is released.

This is the biggest mistake CA have made IMO. I have the game pre ordered.....possibly the biggest mistake I've made ~:(

The fact that factions will be locked has been layed out in the open for a long time already. I don't see the sudden hype about it. Just regard playing
the Julii faction as training.

As for the people that frequently format their hard drives, I am sure there will be some way to mod that restriction out.

The other new review posted at that european web site suggests that that is the case.

I think CA has a hidden reason for locking the non-roman factions.

Let's face it, the Roman factions will be the ones that got most attention and are the most pollished. The other factions will probably look slightly bland in comparison to the Romans regarding the campaignmap, because the Romans have the senate and all.

CA doesn't want to give reviewers and people who just bought the game to tell their readers and friends that their favorite faction has had less attention in the campaign, because that would be bad for sales. Reviewers won't be able to play out an entire campaign before they reach their deadline and need to write their article and will miss this flaw, and so will the public.

In other words, CA has made a cunning plan to cover up this flaw by locking the factions with less features in the campaign. Why else do you think you don't have to unlock the other factions in custom/multiplayer mode but you do with the campaign map?

Not that I really mind. I will still be happily stomping Greeks with my Bruti by the time all you guys have started their 3rd hairy barbarian campaign.

Yeah, I figured that was as much. But even so, give me an interesting faction that I like that may be a bit unpolsiehd than the boring Romans.

That's what I like about the .org, learning new things all the time.

Should have remembered from the last Total War game, when the first faction I played was the Medievals.

Locking factions certainly comes across as a bizarre design decision. ~ I can imagine the howling if Big Huge Games/Microsoft had locked all the nations in Rise of Nations except Rome until you win with them. Sheesh.

This is starting to sound like the MOO3 disaster. Quicksilver and Atari took an award winning series and turned it to crap.
