Just saw it this past weekend. A really good movie, and I rarely say such. Retells the legend of the first emporer of China. Was a huge hit in China, finally released here - subtitled, in theaters now. Directed by the same guy that did Raise the Red Lantern, Red Sorgum and a couple of others that I can't remember. Fantastic scenery, battles, cinamatography. Stars Jet Li. Seems like it should appeal to many of the folks around here - check it out if you get a chance - let me know what your thoughts are.

Best,

I thought it was a great film .Real food for thought as well.
And good to see Jet Li doing something other than second rate action films.

The Arrows, The Arrows!

Yeah, those massed arrow barrages were frightening. I was fascinated by the assault on the caligraphy school, where you see the crossbowmen do their thing. Each man fired his bow laying on his back, using his legs to hold the weapon. Each had a second with a big quiver of bolts for reloading. Was that peculiar to ancient China, or an inaccuracy in the film?

Oh it's accurate alright.

Awesome movie. I love when Nameless requests the 20th variation of the sword, and Broken swords says "That requires red".

the trailers look spectacular, sort of a cross between 'emperor of china' and 'hidden dragon, crouching tiger'. but i'll wait till it's out on dvd and just buy it.

the movie came out in 2002; I saw it in 2003. it made the Hong Kong circuit and then Hollywood got ahold it.

anyway, it was purchased for release, and was subject to the usual butchered editing and dubbing alot of Asian movies go through. tarantino agreed to attach his name to it in return for it being released and distributed in its original; he didn't produce it or anything. if you watch this movie intheaters and then see it on a DVD from 2003, it is the exact same movie down to the subtitles.
but since alot of people will see his name associated with the movie (in adverts, etc.), they'll go see it (which was prob his bargaining point).

More an exercise in style than anything really worth watching. Personally I like stuff like romance of the three kingdoms TV series much better.
