hehehe, you got that right ;)
just downloaded america's army... 7455793 KB file size in 40 minutes (39:55). the normal sustained speed was 314 KBS (compare that to 56k at about 4KBS). my best download speed reached 319.65 KBS and it did drop a few times to a little under 300. my best ever download speed was with the satellite a couple years ago when i downloaded a 100 MB file in under 4 minutes. this dsl speed was about 72 MB in 4 minutes. not bad, and factor in the MUCH increased upload speed of the dsl compared to that old satellite and i'm happy :)
it was a bit tricky getting the router to work with the dsl modem, but finally got that sorted out. i had to reconfigure the modem and the router and if they were hooked up together already, you couldnt get into the interfaces. so, i got to know the tech support guy at bell south pretty good before the afternoon was over :)

DSL changed my life. But then the last 2 months of my year contract, it pooped out. Speeds decreased dramatically, connection became unreliable, etc. SBC jerked me around for 6 weeks instead of just fixing it, so I got cable, which is even better (at least in my area). Its faster than the T1 we pay an arm and leg for at work, and to sweeten the deal, I got a $15/month discount on my digital cable bill too!
Broadband rules. You'll never be able to use a dial-up modem again without cursing and/or laughing.

i've had a grin on my face for 24 hours now :)
i've actually had 'broadband' for years, but there was always some limiting factor that just kept me wanting. the satellite had crappy upload speed (though the download speed was faster than this dsl) and no port forwarding and had a limit of 175 megs per hour. the wireless, which i've had most of this year, also didnt have port forwarding, so no file sharing or hosting of games. so, finally, i think i've got what i really wanted. no blocking, great upload speed and great download speed and a dedicated ip for setting up servers.
so, the grin just refuses to die :)
