First of all, this is my first post here, but I've actually been a lurker for about a year now. I've always enjoyed the various discussions in all the forums, and I should take this opportunity to thank all the posters and espcially frogbeastegg for all the great tips I've taken from this site.

Introductions out of the way, here is my [completely trivial] question that has sort of intrigued me of late, and I'm hoping one of the local "historians" may know the answer:

I realize that the three Roman factions in RTW (four, if you include the Senate) have different colored troops in order to distinguish your troops from the others (particularly in times of Civil War), but I was wondering if historically Roman soldiers wore different colored uniforms. Roman legionaries are popularly depicted with red trim on their armour, but it occured to me that perhaps this was so because the Julii (via Caesar) became the dominant house, and they (in RTW) wear red. So my question is, are the different colored unis for the different Roman factions strictly there for game purposes, or do they have some historical basis?

I know this question probably sounds completely idiotic, so please excuse my ignorance on the subject of ancient Rome. I've only recently began to research the subject in anticipation of RTW's release.

Thanks.

I'm no expert but here's my 2d worth:

AIUI, there is little evidence of a uniform tunic colour, and it is debatable as to whether soldiers within the same unit would even have the same coloured tunics.

first of all welcome to the forum

I'd agree with The Grand Inquisitor. I read on a site earlier that they might have even wore white tunics as well as the red ones (if any1 actually knows i'd also be interested in finding out).

I did come across some pics dipicting roman soldiers in blue tunics although it didn't say anything about which house they were from.
