View Full Version : Historical Battles in R;TW and Time Commanders..

I searched the forums but haven't found a recent thread about which Historical Battles are in... So I decided to make a new topic about it.
Recently I saw the 16min video and I think it was mentioned there that R;TW would only have 10 historical battles.
Now the first question I have is obviously: which ones are those? (Teutoberg Forest is one, Trebia is two, and I remember seeing 2 more but forgot the names.)
The second question is: why haven't they put the historical battles from Time Commanders in? There were 16 shows so far, so 16 historical battles. Since the battles have already been made for the show, and the show has been off the air for quite a while (so they had plenty of time to just copy it or something), why aren't all the battles included?
It seems a bit like a waste of nice battles. Maybe they want to release them after the game is released, once per month?

Chalons contained units unavailable in RTW so that's one that you can definitely count out

Actually when you think about it MTW only contained three Historical Battles (Sterling, Bannokburn & Hastings)

Weren't the others "Historical Campaigns"? ~;)

From the PAK files in the Demo -
WARNING! DO NOT LOOK IF YOU WANT TO BE SUPRISED!

Teutoberg (Roman vs German)
Trebia (Hannibal vs Rome)
Pharsalus (Pompey vs Caesar - both Roman)
Spartacus (Spartacus vs Rome)
Carrhae (Rome vs Parthia)
Cynocephela (Macedonia vs Rome)
Mancetter (Rome vs Britons)
Telamon (Gauls vs Rome)
Raphia (Seleucia vs Ptolemaic Egypt) - no Romans!
Lake Trasimene (Hannibal vs Rome)
Siege of Syracuse (Syracuse vs Rome)
Zama (Hannibal vs Rome) - In North Africa
Magnesia (Seleucia vs Rome) - Seleucids got a drubbing in RL here
Arausio (Barbarian tribes (Germans?) vs Rome)
Jugurtha (Numidia vs Rome)
Chaeronea (Pontus vs Rome)
Gergovia (Gauls vs Rome)
Alexandria (Caesar(Rome) vs Ptolemy)
Bibracte (Gauls vs Rome)
Mons Graupius (Britons vs Rome)
Tigranocerta (Armenia vs Rome)
Siege of Sparta (Sparta vs Pyrrhus) - no Romans!

If there are only going to be 10 then half of that list will go. Which ones I don't know.

Hmmm... a few odd battles, but more or less all the good ones are in.
I would still love to see a Pydna, pure phalanx vs. pure legion, not the mish-mash of Magnesia. Also slightly surprised to see Trasimene rather than Cannae (perhaps Cannae is too hard?).

All in all good battles, and I hope it isn't ten battles only...

Cannae will probably be in there.

There would probably be an outcry if it was not included!

Erm.. which one is Cannae again? I recongnize the name, but I can't think of the importance, or even who fought. :embarassed:
And why are there so many stinking Roman ones? :furious3:

Hannibal's battles with Rome goes from Trebia-Trasimene-Cannae-Zama. Cannae is the battle that set the stage for almost every commander since. Some argue it has been the most important ancient battle in the tactical sense. Hannibal took him vastly outnumbered army and fought on terrain fitting his enemy and basically wiped them out. 50,000 Romans and allies. That is why it should be included.

And why are there so many stinking Roman ones? :furious3:

Does Rome: Total War ring a bell?
Besides, it seems the first faction is the one we will play, so in fact there are only 5 Roman battles.

Actually I didn't really put them in any particular order, they dont appear in any order that seems to suggest which faction is playable, I think in some battles one is playable while in others both are playable.

That is good... Then we can more or less chose to play the Romans or not.
