Well, IMO, the best mods are :
1 - BKB's supermod : Just awesome, a huge number of new factions/units, better game balance, etc. (Total War XL is kinda the same thing, with less new units, but the game is even more challenging).
2 - Napoleonic Total War : Great mod, though a bit easy IMO.
3 - Hellenic Total War : Another great mod, graphics are better than in the original game. Unhappilly, I think it's kinda unbalanced (I especially don' t like the way how a few Hopliton units can hammer a huge Persian or barbarian army with only a few losses)
There are other mods that will be released soon (won't they ? ~D )and will probably be as good as those ones :
Middle Earth Total War (Lord of the ring based)
The Diadochi
Fury of the Northmen
The Wheel of Time
MedMod- I wouldn't play MTW without it! It makes things much more challenging, and more realistic as well... no more building Arab Infantry in Russia!!

Yeah MedMod is awesome.
I don't think I'll ever fire up MTW without a mod anymore.

I'm currently enjoying XL and think it is excellent, makes the game really tough. Have been playing the Scots and am playing one of the most exciting game I have played, just fighting for my survival :surrender:

Never tried any of the mods myself, i'm still having my fun with MTW. I recently started to play it often because of the upcoming RTW release and I felt like reliving some classic battle moments. However I do want to try the NTW mod, I hear from word of mouth that it is quite good.
lol, i asked this very question last week and got no replies.
currently loving XL atm, great fun.
i have Arthur, H:TW and N:TW d/l'ed but have not yet tried them.
i am waiting for several others to get final releases before i d/l them as i'm lazy.
i have played M:TW a hundred times more than any other single game over the years, but it was finally wearing thin, so imagine my joy when i found the game had a whole new lease of life less than a month ago.

yeah, same here, I loved original MTW and played it to death, but it was getting slightly boring. Couldn't believe my luck when I finally visited the engineers guild and found all these great mods! Hats off to Wes, VH, BKB and all the others who make awesome mods to liven up our MTW experience!

Well, for a treat and a good surprise I would definately go for the Arthur mod, and for a big increase in gameplay quality, the MedMod, BKB mod, VH XL mod or Kekvit mod. Other good mods are- Shogun mod for MTW, Napoleonic Total War and Hellenic Total War.
When they come out, I deeply suggest you try the Citadel Total War mod or the American Conquest Mod (more info in my sig) as well. :charge:

Just making sure you mean mtw or viking invasion because all the mods metioned are only for viking invasion and the only mod that insn't is one of the betas of middle earth total war.
But mods too look out for, for me are 16th 17th century mod, alogic's Diadora and middle earth total war mod. You should go look at the screenshots
Could someone tell me where I can download the XL mod? I've looked on the MTW downloads secetion here at the org.com but I can't see it? Maybe I'm being totally blind but if anybody could direct me to it???? :help:

My vote is for Wesmod. The mod is awesome, trying to create some challenge that is not present in vanilla MTW. Wesmod didn't allow the AI to create entire armies of peasants and Urban militia but instead you will fight average to elite armies and Crusades are something nasty to deal with, AI ships are fulling the map and can destroy your entire fleet in 2 turns. The mod really takes you into another dimension, it adds a lot of challenge. Playing hard in Wesmod is better than playing expert in vanilla MTW. :charge:
There are some mistakes like Almughavars bonuses in France, VG (Paranamoi) vastly decreased in armour, attack and defence or Mamluk cavalry as bodyguards in Early period but not in high... but you can correct it easily.
