hi all,
Not sure if others have read it, but I'm about 3 quarters through a book called "RUBICON" by a fellow named Tom Holland, which does some in-depth cultural analysis of the Republic between about 110 BC and the mid-40s BC.
Holland at times plays very loose with his sources, but overall it's been an interesting reconstruction of the motivations of major players in this period. It's loaded with nice details that you never get in the standard university courses. For example, I never knew that debt played such a huge factor in Caesar becoming pontifex maximus.
Anyway, recommended with some reservations regarding scholarly rules of conduct ~:)
