please help a pathetic newbie...

Hello,

i finally got a computer good enough to play shogun total war and i just picked it up at sam's club the other day.

anyhow i'm pathetic -- i've played the 3rd tutorial mission (you have samurai archers and you must destry the yari soldiers) about 10 times and i can't defeat them! i read the manual, but it has nothing about tactics and how to win a battle.

Hi maresk,

Bring the archers to the crest of the hill and put them in a double row. Shoot at the YS as they come up the hill. When the YS get close hold down the ALT key and double click on the YS with the mouse to order a hand-to-hand attack. The archers should win since they have a height advantage, and the YS have lost men to the arrows. Good luck.

thanks for the tip!

i didn't know you needed to charge down the hill at them. i always kept shooting and even after pelting them with 1/2 of all my arrow ammo, they'd still only lose about 2-3 troops of their 34. then i'd get creamed.

wow... thanks for all your responses. glad to see such a warm community. i thought this board might be dying because on the homepage it was mentioned the forums would be going down soon.

Create your own custom battles
Give each army 8000 koku do not select random units. Pick your army. If you attack choose an army you would use to defend for the defender. You can work up from easy to expert.

just remember these basics :

Spearman > cavelry
Cavelry > archers
archers > infantry
No Dachi,Warrior monks > other infantry

a decent army for me and a newbie would be 1 yari-cav, 3-yarisam, 1 nodachi, and 2 archers, and if you have the koku buy a unit or two of monks, and a few ashi wouldnt go amiss in reserve at the rear, the ,monks are good basicly try and hold on with the basic troops for as long as possible, while the enemys withering his moral and freshness down youve got guys at the back twiddlin' there thumbs and humming away, once you think your enemy is wavering send in the monks on full charge and slice 'n' dice, and if you got any spare cav not already engaged, run round and cut off the retreat...oh and go for there moral, hits to there rear and kill the general, and rout the ashi, specialy if there ashi are in a position where they'll rout through other enemy units, theres nothing more fatal to a war effort on the battlefeild then scardy cat ashi running back to there mommys, basicly if you know what your armys strengths and weaknesses are then as sun tsu said, you will achieve vitory every time(or sommin along those lines ^_^ http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/wink.gif

maresk at the 3rd tutorial mission i used to have the same problem before playing the game i played the demo (it has only the tutorial) and i managed to win all the missions with ease but when after a year when the game finaly was finished i tryed again tutorial and i did not mannage to beat the 3rd tutorial my archers run like hell when the yari got closer after playing for some time i got the solution you must chose "engage at will" option from upper right of the screen and the archers will atach with the swords when yari got near them
