Is something wrong with playing as romans suddenly? Most people i hear on the boards dislike playing as romans for some reason.I made a poll to see as what faction u will be starting after u bought RTW.

err... you can only play as romans at the start. All others have to be unlocked.

I just don't believe that I am very suited to romans. As I am a hit-and-run guy, I go for Parthians.

I don't mind playing as a roman faction. Will prob play Roman first (as you have to) then after a britton campaign will prob play all the roman factions.

And don't forget, even though your first (real) campaign is a Roman one, you still have 3 Roman factions to choose from. (Or download the mod). I chose Julii, and I'm seriously into it. You got the whole senate thing to deal with which is awesome. Appeasement of Rome and the senate are factors that are regularly monitored. This is a whole new game element. I don't imagine the other factions get this?

Theres other ways to unlock all factions without playing at all, i dislike that method though i am sure it is used by many.
I will first play as a Roman faction and then i might go for one of the barbarian factions.

People don't like having the choice made for them, I think, but they'll get over it. Bragging rights are up for grabs: "Hey, I've unlocked the Parthians already. How about you?"

I just cheated and made all the factions playable (apart from senate and barbs). First campaign as Greek City States. Lost Syracuse fairly quickly to the damn Scipii, started another as Pontus. Pontus looks a fairly strong faction, with good cavalry, chariots and decent infantry.

Most people won't bother with the mods and cheats to use other non-Roman factions first. That's why your question may not be producing the correct results about which faction people want to play first.

I love cavalry and would likely play Parthians first but went Julii anyway since I couldn't do Parthians first.

Becuase the fun is beating Rome, not playing them :)

I'm playing as Julii, and will happily do so for a while yet to learn the game mechanics and what works/what doesn't diplomatically.

But once I get comfortable with the game, I want to smash the Julii as punishment for their leader's crimes. The genocides against the Helvetii and Venetians are inexcuseable, and my Gaelic blood boils every time I read about it.

No satisfaction will be greater than playing the Gauls and springing a nice little winter surprise on Julius.

I hate Romans. No cavalry, and their all politicians. Bunch of lucky wimps, except for Marius and Africanus.

As said, most people dont like being told what to do. And many are very jealous of the Roman Empire for various reasons.

Romans are alright in my book.

Play non Roman and you only compete with other factions.

Play as Rome and you contend with history.

Well, this is exactly why I probably will like Greece and the Seleucids better:

Don't compete with history... rewrite it alltogether!!!

I'll probably still start with the Romans though... just so I know I earned the right to play with the other factions  (but on hard/hard to make it at least some challenge).

Most people want to play as the non-Roman factions because...

1) Fascination - They find them interesting and/or are fans of their culture and history.

2) Hatred - Their love for a competing faction has given them a deep seated dislike of Rome (see 'fans of Carthage').

3) Everyone Loves an Underdog - Everyone roots for the little guy at one point or another in their life.

4) Something New/Exoticism - When was the last time a computer game offered you the chance to conquer the ancient world as one of these less-than-famous factions?

5) BECAUSE WE CAN!!!

FYI, it will take a person no more than 5 minutes to use Notepad to change the relevant text file so that every single faction becomes playable. Why sludge through an entire short Roman campaign when you can give the Scythians, Armenians or Iberians a go right NOW?!?

And Ceaser and Brutus.
Nope. Caesar was just rich, and lucky. As was Brutus. Besides, I hate politicians. ~;p
