2.Shogun Total War FAQ

Here's a list of the questions which are asked most by newcomers :

Question :
How Do I retrain units?
Answer :Place the unit you wish to retrain in a province where there are also the facilities to train new units of the same kind.Click the unit you wish to retrain and then open the training screen (by pressing the little Icon in the lower left corner) and then while it's open, click and drag the unit you want to retrain into the training que (I'll post a picture soon).
So if you want to retrain a unit of Yari Samurai, you can only do so in a province where there's a spear dojo. However, if you only want to retrain the unit to get upgrades available in the province, any training facility will do.
---
Question :
What's the use of retraining?
Retraining restores the selected unit to it's full amount of men again, it also provides the unit with all the upgrades available in the region. So if you have a unit of warrior monks with just 45 men and no upgrades ,and you retrain it in a province where there's an armoury and a swordswith (and a Temple), you'd get a unit of 60 monks, with a weapon and armour upgrade of +1 in return.
---
Question :
I try to play online but all I get is the message "logging on" or "Failed to connect", what's wrong ?
Answer : To bad, when you get that message, the server is down, the only thing you can do is wait.
---
Question :
Why do some people have other pictures than other people in front of their names?
Answer:The picture in front of your name is determined by the number of posts you make.
The more posts you have the higher your rank gets. http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/icons/icon1.gif It doesnt say anything about the quality of the posts or of the human being posting them though (to avoid another discussion http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/wink.gif).
---
Question :
What are all the ranks available?
Answer:Here's a picture to show you :
http://www.totalwar.org/images/icons.gif .
---
Question :
How do you post pictures in your posts?
Answer:To post pictures you have to use UBB Code (http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/ubbcode.html)
The code is [ img ] (remove the spaces before the i and after the g).and then type the URL of the picture (the location of the picture). If you see a funny picture (no offensive material ofcourse), you can right click it and go to properties to see the url, when you've typed the url (or copied and pasted it) you must close the tag again to make the picture work, you do this by typing [ /img ] ,and again ,remove the spaces before the / and after the g.
---
Question :
Where can I host pictures ?
Answer:Certain hosts wont allow remote hosting (letting pictures be seen on other sites then the ones they're hosting). I have very good experiences with Netfirms (http://www.netfirms.com).
Sign up and you'll get an email explaining everything. You'll need an FTP programm( a programm which allows you to send files) and I recommend FreeFTP (http://www.freeftp.com).
---
Question :
I want to play online but there are a few people who call me names and make fun off me, should I leave?
Answer: NO!
instead you can ignore them Do this by clicking the name of the person you want to ignore, and type : "#ignore" without the " ".Or you can just join another game.Do not leave because there are some pathetic individuals who make fun of you...Instead try to find out who are nice (a lot of people) and remember their names so you can play them again later.

to any new player to on-line shogun, welcome http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif
some things to keep in mind.

there are several different types of people in shoggie, of which most are reasonably nice. tho in order to prepare you for what you might experience in the upcoming weeks, i lay this info at your feet.(wow, i rhymed) there is a number next to your nick that represents competitive league play. some people think that number is important, and i guess to them, it is. there is nothing wrong with that. if you aren't into competition, play friendlies. you will have great fun http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif. if you are competitive, play friendly games until you can hold your own. the rateing system is a little defective, therefore most high ranked players don't like to play against lower ranked players. please, keep in mind that competitive or not, fun is the real goal here http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif. oh, the types of games (friendly or comp) is shown at the right side of the game listing.

keep in mind this one piece of advice for your gaming pleasure...learn your hotkeys and keep your men together as much as possible http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif be sure you learn the uses for the various commands...ie...hold formation, hold position...etc....

again i stress, have fun & welcome http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif

And some more:

GTG = I got to go.
CYA = See you! (bye bye!)
OMG = Oh my God!
VGG = Very good game! (woh! was a good one!)
DOH! = Baffled reaction (Homer Simpson)
M8 = Mate/friend.
8k = 8.000
Lat = Latency (low is fast/high is slow)
Lag = Slow sluggish game.

AFK - Away from keyboard!

Note to newbies also. Some players will have certain rules in their games. These are unofficial rules ie they aren't programmed into the game, but maybe things like:

"4 max" - maximum of 4 units of one type
"No Ashis/Musks/etc" - don't choose the said unit(s)
"8 maximum units" - someone hosting a big game might say this to combat lag, simply choose up to 8 units only.

Another rule that everyone agrees is "No RZ". RZ means "Red Zone" - which is an area around the battle map that you cannot usually send units into. However, by selecting 2 units together, then moving them close the the RZ, a unit might wander into this area.

Hmmm ... will try and think of more soon http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif

Vanilla - an "Out of the Box" unpatched version of any of the Total War Games,
(needed to play Historical Battles in WE/MI)

WE/MI (WEMI) - warlords edition/mongol invasions, when talking about a feature that is common to both,
the two are basically identical after all.

Gah!

All new players should immediately learn the vital Principles for the battlefield!

Principle #1) Gah! Cut heads off! Gah!

This key motivational phrase will order your thoughts and ensure you focus on your goal at all times.

Principle #2) Integrity.

Do not cheat or lie. People who cheat and lie are robbing themselves of half their lives. You cannot live without spirit.

Principle #3) Gah! Cut heads off! Gah!

Yes, it is the same as #1. It is so important, Krast includes it twice.

Right this is in no order and just a load of stuff that popped in my head while I thought along.

GTG - Got to go.

AKA - also known as (common for me The Soul aka MaJestic Soul aka TigerSoul aka HCSoul aka .... .... (skip about 30 aliases) ... .... .... .... aka Kamatsu.

When online. If you type "#afk" without the "" you become publicly away from keyboard. Anybody who tries to private message you recieve a message stating that you are not currently available.

Other commands "#locate XXX XXX" where XXX is a players name. This should tell you where a player is (if they're online.) BUT for some reason there's an error in this. When you type that in, if the player is online, it doesn't matter what room he is in, it will always say he's in the same room as you. This isn't too much of a problem tho' as mostly there aren't any more rooms beside the main foyer - and there aren't enough players!

Note: typing "#locate M" will list all players with M as their first initial.

Note also: If the player is not online you get no response at all.

I think someone explained #ignore/#unignore.

Oh yes #addbuddy XXX XXX" (doing this from memory and I'm not sure if addbuddy is right) but this'll add the person to your buddy list. Everytime this person enters your room it'll notify you, and if you enter a room they're in it'll notify you aswell. I think "#removebuddy XXX XXX" takes them off your buddy list. Not sure how accurate these buddy commands are but I used to use them.

Private messaging. If you wanna Private meessage multiple players just hold CTRL+ Click on all the players you want to message on the Room Playerlist.

____________________

Sometimes the scrolling may freeze. Dunno what causes this but neither scroll bars will work so you cannot scroll back on the chat and scroll down on the playerlist. This may require logging off STW/STWMI and logging back on, or if this doesn't work restarting the game again completely.

Also sometimes you may find your room playerlist "sticks" When players enter/leave the list doesn't change. Simply hit "Chat room" and "Internet Games" and the list should update itself.

____________________

Logging on
If when you enter you see no-one in the room, exit and re-enter the game server. You may need to do this 4/5 times but sometimes this happens for no reason I understand.

Geisha. A question sometimes raised is "Can I turn off Geisha" or something in those lines. Unfortunately you can't turn these off you must find ways to get past 'em http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif

Add these before Tera can fire ya Mith. Meanwhile I'll think of some more if I can. Getting to the point where things don't just pop into my head http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif

Wow! Cool thing!

I want to add an abbreviation
DIY - do it your self

and ask about meaning of another abbreviation - what is "LMFAO"?

And, as I understood, retraining is useful when you're quickly marching through newly got provinces that have necessary dojos but sometimes can have no swordsmiths/armories.
