View Full Version : Weather in RTW - Like STW or MTW?

Is the weather system better than the relatively uninteresting MTW one?

Can one get the cool heavy fogs and snow blizzards that made for some really interesting fights in STW?

And can the attacker still pick the weather on the day they decide to fight?

oh yeah! I remember the very heavy fog days, that was awesome!

I've seen heavy fog, sandstorms, rain, and blizzards. You can probly wait to change the weather but I've never bothered to try it :)

I don't think you can pick your weather, but perhaps it changes if the battle lasts long enough. My only experience with weather so far was a huge thunderstorm during one of my most desperate defensive battles. Made great atmosphere.

Yes, if you wait the weather does change... I had one standoff last night that started with clear blue skies on a cold winter day, clouded over, then started snowing lightly and suddenly had a howling blizzard for a bit. Was very cool. Cold, I mean.

One thing for sure is that the weather does not change once you've committed to battle on a given day. The AI once again besieged a city of mine where I had a clear numerical and qualitative advantage over the sieging troops. I sortied out to meet them and it was raining. Since I had 5 Roman archer units which are useless in wet weather I hit Ctrl-T to speed up the time and hoped for clear skies, just like I used to do in Medieval... no dice. I left the time compression on for a looong time and the rain never let up. So I stayed inside the city walls, ended the battle in a draw and then sortied out again, this time under a sunny sky.

I really hope for some great moody weather...

I can't forget the time I advanced, in STW, up a hill, seeking the better position against the enemy. It was stormy and thunder was playing while rain was thick as logs. Suddenly a lightning lit up everything and to my horror I saw a unit of Monks right in front of me, they duly charged me and I lost horribly.

It is the only time I have ever yelled out in shock at a TW game. How I long for it again.

I remember marching across a valley to attack the enemy on the hill opposite. It was STW 2v2 and the rain was torrential. My ally chose Takeda so I could hardly see him :dizzy2: What a slog that was but we won it ~:)
MTW never captured the mood anywhere near STW, where the rain looked like rain and snow looked like snow.
Is RTW more realistic, like STW was?

I have not gotten as much weather in RTW that I recall getting in MTW and STW.

However I have had a couple of dawn/dusk battles that looked absolutely gorgeous. ~

Carthaginian Campaign battles...

One in Sicily against Scipii and one in Lybia against Rebels.

At first I thought my eyesight was going from playing RTW to long.

Then I picked up the golden hues and darker shades.

Once I realized what it was I was pretty impressed.

Took a while for it to sink into my sleep-deprived brain.

I suppose it's all going to depend on where one is battling. If you're Scipii down battling for Sicily then you're not going to get much in the way of fog or snow. We really need to hear from those battling up the North.

But alas, I do remember with fondness the heavily snow and fog battles in STW where visibility could be so poor that both you and the AI would surprise each other! Truly adrenaline rushing events they were, and were great for breaking the mould of the boring sunny day battles.

It does for me. I've seen it many times. I've had atleast 5 battles where it starts sunny and then rain comes after 15-20 mins or so. Also sandstorms that come and go in the desert.

But I seem to remember that nightbattles will not happen in RTW, unless you play them long enough for night to come, and then dawn again... I can't possibly believe you played that long, especially with all the battle timer talk going on.

I've not seen any real evidence of weather yet, after many, many battles. I did get a comment once about the desert being hot so troops would tire quickly. I've been fighting in Sicily, Sardinia, Africa, Spain and southern Italy. I've also not seen the time of day change, of course, with a 20 minute timer it really wouldn't matter.

Perhaps when I get up north there will be weather?

This is so much different than MTW, where every single day it rained, snowed or had a sandstorm, even if it started out "fair." Would be nice if we could get a little balance...

Oh, man one of the first times I played STW alone, at home, I cranked the volume
Forecast:
Heavy Rain all day

I was playing then

"BOOOOOOOOMMMMM CRACKKKKKKKKK"
Man the lightning on the game is so real sounding, I jumped...

I finished my Julii campaign and after 100+ battles these are the weather conditions I have had:

1. Fair
2. Snow (light)
3. Rain (light)
4. Fog (light)

I know there are other weather conditions becasue I've seen them in custom battles.
