attack strategy

hi im kind of a newbie here and i had won my first battle. I would really like to win more. What is the best way for attacking the enemy and which is the best troops to use? I really need some help with offensive and deffensive tactics.. so that i can become an acceptional opponent..thanks

Here's my advice, and keep in mind I only play single player. Basically you want want to hit the enemy on the flank, or as Forrest put it "Hit'em on the end" You always want to flank your opponent if possible, for two reasons. One is when you flank them they take a hit in morale, and two you have more troops attacking than your opponent has defending in this area, especially since your are basically hitting them at their side.

On defense I like to set my army up on the tallest hill I can find, and make it where my opponent must attack me up hill. I usually mass my hardest hitting troops on one end of my line leaving my archers and a unit or two of yaris to pin down the other flank and center of my opponents line. With the mass of troops I hit the enemy on the flank and try to get some troops in their rear as well.

Cavalry, monks and no dachi are best for this since they hit fast and hard due to their mobility. They can get in the enemys rear and are attacking before they can re-adjust their line to meet the attack.

On the attack I use the same philosophy I try to pin down the enemys flank and center, and use fast troops ie cav, monk...etc to hit the enemy on the other flank, and their rear.

Of course all this is theory since in the game as in real life things don't always work just like you want them too, and you have to do something different. Basically the above is what I do, or at least try to. Good luck and enjoy the game http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif

check out the post "new formation" It works wonders.

also remember to keep an eye on the morale of all your troops, as soon as they get uncertain, reinforce their flanks.

dont send solitairy units vs the enemy (unless they're Cavelry archers and the enemie has no cavelry).

okay what ever compasition army you have(btw dont use a whole army of one unit if you want to win, one unit army's tend to have too many weaknesses) the best bet is to either 1) totaly out number the enemy, they'll retreat, but if your playing multiplayer or custom battles, your best bet is to smash up there moral like they were facing shinigami(god/angel of death in japanese, more likely god, since gami is god in japanese) try to kill there general, and dont throw your general into the deep end right off, if he dies then you'll get a taste of your own medicine, basicly dont send in ashigaru into battle as soon as it starts, ashigaru arnt exactly famous for there bravery against fresh troops, unless your up against cav and y-ash, i once killed the daimyos unit down to two guys and took his daimyo, cause my 2 y-ash was up against a daimyo, yari-cav, and sam-arch....basicly use logic and common sense, if the enemys charging with cav think of the movie braveheart, yes you remembering now arnt ya?, that bit where the english horsey's get impaled upon wooden spears?...yes it was a massacre wasnt it?.....hope i helped http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/biggrin.gif

One thing is clear in shogun NEVER but NEVER use cavelry against yari even havy cavalry will be smashed even by ashigaru.
The second thing is that before WE/MI monks were the best Now i belive that naginata cavalry is stronger.
My favorite tactic when defending i put first range units then in the back whatever melee units i have except cavalry who is at one side ranged units must allways be in a two row formation and loose formation and melee into wedge formation then i wait for enemies when they are aproaching the ranged units i charge with melee units except cavalry few enemy have the guts to resist the first enemy units are ussualy tired and fewer in number because of my ranged units and if the first enemy unit runs all the enemy panics and runs then i attack with yari cavalry who are faster then havy cavalry with this tactic i kill so many that the line of kills is like 90% green.

I agree with the first part of what takkran says about cal. against ashis. I attacked a AI gen. with 3 stars with my 2 star one and used 3 groups of yari cav. against 18 ashi and still got creamed.

You guys obviously have not had the privilege of meeting Magyar Khan's all cav army.
