I had a case last night where I was sieging a city and the enemy had sallied forth. After killing most of them I started to chase them into the city. My general got seperated from his unit when the gates closed. He was stuck outside while most of his company were inside. The company chased some of his archers into the city center but then got all confused. Once I bashed the gate in I tried to get the company to meet somewhere but they seemed incapable of finding each other. It took a concerted effort to get the unit to re-form. By themselves they never would have met up. Has anyone else had this problem?

Not quite like that, but I have had some assaults go poorly when units chose reverse 180 degree paths inside the city. I charged some cav across the edge of the plaza to kill some routed cav way on down the road. Instead they turned back and attacked the spearmen in the center. ~:mecry: Had several problems with paths in that battle. Cost me two full cav units.

Pathing inside structures is improved over MTW/VI. There were wide no-go zones in VI and units had to be carefully manipulated to get them to actually move.

The pathing is a little sketch in cities, I agree. One thing that may be a city bug was I had a First Cohort Legion in a Custom battle with the barbarians seiging Rome. I had a little time to spare as the enemy were approaching so I was looking at my units and had never seen them form the teustudo (sp?) so I clicked the button and my men started marching sideways. I thought that perhaps they needed some room to do it but they kept walking until I told them to stop. I never was able to make them get into the formation as they kept doing that - and it was in the huge plaza in the center of Rome.... so that was odd

also I notice that units can't find the quickest way to get from one place to another in cities so it's a constant micromanage.

It is most problematic on units with default loose formation. I had 4 Libyan(? I can't remember) mercenaries shot to pieces because the large towers because they hug and get stuck in buildings. :skull:

there may be some bugs with the pathing in general. Last night had a battle - I grouped some hastati and ordered them to form a line - well they formed the line alright but well on my right facing a different direction. I know for a fact i did not click a different area by mistake.

Also some cav grouped by itself somehow attached themselves to this infantry group and would only follow instructions given to the infantry. I could not give the cav group an order they would follow by themselves. Had to ungroup everybody and redo. Not major but it through my whole battle line into chaos while I sorted out. This was not in a city btw.

My experience with city battles (which I really enjoy) is that the units require more babysitting with directions as they don't seem to follow them so well. But need some more testing to be sure.

Yes, it's definatly a mixed bag around cities/forts. Hopefully CA can fine tune this more...

DO NOT try to charge across one side of a plaza with cav while avoiding the guys in the center. Every time I do it, the cav changes direction and attacks the danged spears. It's like some sort of wierd gravitational field. A black hole for cavalry. I tested this again tonight and got slaughtered by my disjointed cavalry turning to hit the spears piecemeal and frontally. DUH! I kept trying to withdraw when I saw them turn, but they would turn around and charge back. It was comicly stupid.

Yes, I had that happen to me too. I wanted to flank the units in the town square, so I told my general's unit to run northwest to get to the west side while my troops engage from the south. Needless to say, my cavalry rushed straight through to the town square. Fortunately, my general only took 50% losses and replenishes on his own. Town square black hole is an apt term for it.

Also, pathfinding really sucks. My troops take long cuts near arrow towers even if there are safer, shorter routes. I have to babysit way too much.

Yes, i've seen this a lot. Grouping seems to be really screwy, especially in siege battles. My common tactic is to group all units with siege equipment into one group, and all the other units into a second group. I firstly give the first groups' units (ones with the siege equipment) orders to attack the walls, and off they go to do their thing. However if I then select the second group and order them to move up closer to the walls, the first groups' units stop their advance, and turn around to head for the same destination as the second group. Basically, both groups were receiving the same orders!!! I find this happens a lot in battles, and I simply CANNOT use groups at all, especially during sieges.

Anyone wishing to should try it out... you'll see what I mean.

ah, that explains why my units were ignoring my commands during last siege. clicking units invidually was fine but in groups did not work - thought it was something I was doing.
