I can't get the game to install. Those of you who have installed and are playing would you do me a favor and check CD III and see if you have this folder:

x:\Setup\Data\Data\

I think there's an error and that there shouldn't be TWO "Data" folders.
Maybe you guys with working copies have only one folder, see below (THANKS!!!) Also, can you open the file autorun.ini:

I opened the "Setup" folder then the "rsrc" folder, and I tried to open the file, autorun.ini with Notepad. The file wouldn't open and I got this error:

Quote:
Cannot open the x:\Setup\rsrc\autorun.ini file. Make sure a disk is in the drive you specified.

This seems odd!

The next thing that seems odd is that the file "pack.dat", where is my install hangs, is located in x:\Setup\Data\Data\animations\pack.dat.

What's with the ....\Data\Data\....?? I mean the only thing in the first "Data" folder is another folder named "Data". Why have two folders named Data like this? Why have a 2nd Data folder? THIS HAS GOT TO BE THE PATHING PROBLEM!!! causing the 1305 error!!

PLEASE can anyone confirm the above in bold? Specifically, does everyone including those who can install the game have the double "Data" folder? I'm thinking there must have been some error and some CDs have the double Data folders and others do not.

Either that or there is an error with the "Autorun.ini" file, either the file is corrupt, doesn't point to a ....\Data\Data\ folder, or both.

Eventually, I'm going to get around to emailing Activision, because Houston we have a problem.

Toranaga, disc III does have the "data/data" subfolders, so you are okay there.

However, I was able to open the autorun.ini in the rsrc subfolder. I just used the "open" from the right-click-on-the-file and it opened in Notepad just fine. BTW, this file has nothing in it that references the "data/data" folders.

Just to satisfy my curiosity, can you post or PM me the contents of the file. I'm wondering if there's a pointer within the file that may be incorrect, specifically a \data vs \data\data or vice versa.

And/or, if I can get a confirmation, that others are having problems, opening this file, perhaps we may be closer to the bottom of things.

Thanks MUCH!

This game is driving me crazy and I haven't played a single turn.

Sounds a lot like a bad CD. Let us know what you figure out.

Sounds like the copy protection (safe disc or whatever RTW uses) having issues with your CDrom or 3rd party software you might be running.

I've had this problem before with other games, you should have seen the issues it caused with the NWN expansion pack, about 1/5th of the people who got the game couldnt install it.

Basically disable EVERYTHING when trying to install the game. Ctrl-alt-delete and turn off everything. Otherwise its off to the registry editor for you.

I could tell you what to do there that will fix your problem, but after your unwarrented post in the other topic, I doubt I will.

Ill let you find out for yourself. Youll learn better that way anyway.

Here's a hint tho, have a look through the Entrance Hall.

I've been posting my progress in the Entrance Hall thread:

https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/showthread.php?t=36597&page=1&pp=30

Everything is pointing to a bad CD.

Seeing as our little flame session seems to be boiling over here, and there's a thread for this in EH, thread closed
