Just a thought...

Can you change the unit the General commands from cavalry to infantry. I think this is possible -- In the Export_descrip_unit you can switch the general_unit attribute to infantry units instead of cavalry.

My reasoning is that the AI is not as reckless with infantry as it is with cavalry and you don't have the issue with the AI General outpacing the infantry and trying to take on an entire army by himself.

Sounds like a very plausible solution. However, it might still decide that the unit is the toughest of the army's retinue and charge it forward headlong in fray regardless. Only testing will tell, and I don't have the game yet... :(

Other possibilities:
- changing it to Missile - maybe make the General unit Skirmish though and that's not ideal.
- reducing the offensive stats so that the AI presumably doesn't then recognise it as the toughest of its units and charges it headlong into the fray.

Good idea but this particular AI issue really needs to be addressed in a patch ASAP. For whatever reason CA turned back the clock on certain aspects of the Total War tactical AI to its pre-patched MTW ways. I remember when MTW's generals were fairly suicidal and people complained about it. CA listened to our complaints and addressed them in a patch. Suddenly we had AI generals that actually held back and acted as a tactical reserve instead of blindly charging into the fray and getting killed so there's hope yet for the future of RTW's tactical AI.
