View Full Version : Memorable moments in battle

I had a moment in a city assault that made me smile. As my troops tried to make their way to the central plaza, a group of velites, having exhausted their javelins in the initial assault, had a phalanx come up on their rear. I still had a unit of wardogs near the gate. I selected the wardogs & zoomed in on the two units of men facing off in the street. My velites prowled forward cautiously, seeming to look for any gap in the spears (nice animation work, CA!). I put the camera at a waist-high position behind the phalanx, & at what seemed like the right time, I ordered the wardogs to charge in. Then, just as the phalanx began to charge forward on my men, I saw the pack of dogs tear into the rear, tearing down the ones in the back, their bodies bending & lurching forward from the attack, & sending the entire phalanx running forward in complete panic. Not more than a couple of them reached the plaza. :knight:

Anyone else have a story to share?

Three phalaxes behind my city gate gaurding the right, left, and center. The egyptians sent 3 units of horsemen, and 2 of chariots through the gate. None left alive. ~:smoking:

Too bad normal battles go too quickly to remember. I can't wait to test the killing rate mod today.

A large British force arrives to assault the Irish settlement of Kara. After a tough fight through the gates, the last few enemy units retreat to the courtyard. A unit of 40 or so British headhurlers begins to move into position.

The enemy general, who's entire Warband had been slaughtered at the gates, regains his courage and decides to charge. I'm zoomed way in on him, just admiring the fantastic graphics as this lone warrior, dressed in leather armor and wielding a short sword, charges down towards my forces, not even noticing the faint whirling sound I hear. Then, with a wet splat, a couple dozen human heads slam into the guy, tossing him backwards with tremendous force and leaving him in a crumpled heap on the ground, surrounded by dozens of severed heads.

I'm telling you, it just doesn't get any better than this. ~D

For me it HAS to be a siege I just fought.

The Numibians betrayed our alliance/trade agreement and sent 2 armies of over 2k men each to siege Memphis with stone walls. I had been constructing Silvershields in Thebes and Alexandria, and my archer factory was Memphis.

The attacking force were hordes and hordes of Numbibian spearmen supported by lots of skirmishers. My defending force consisted of, 4 units of Archers, 1 battered Cretan archer force roughly 45 men left, 2 rhodian slingers less than 50% strength 2 Phalanx Pikemen units General and a unit of peltasts.

When the assault began, the numibians came at me with 3! siege towers around 16 ladders and 1 ram.

I knew I had to limit the number of entry points so I focused my archers on burning the ram, success. Now I just had to worry about those siege towers/ladders. I was able to whittle down the attackers significantly from the walls. Knowing a ground level breach was impossible now. I sent my Phalanxes up the central towers to either side of the gate house, reasoning was, I could afford to lose control of towers but not the gate house. My archers/slingers/peltasts did their job holding off the Numibian infantry while my phalanxes did most of the killing. In the end the combined armies of Numibia had somewhere around 3k dead infantry, the skirms never entered the fray and simply retreated when the infantry assault failed.

I wouldnt say the battle was a difficult one. My archers DECIMATED his infantry on their approach. Some of the siege towers made it to my walls with less than 20 men left. My ranged units while not up to the task in a pitched battle were able to maintain massive numerical superiority over the AI as it trickled in up the ladders/siege towers.

Just the epic nature of it all. It was a total LOTR moment from the movies ;p

So archers on the inside of cities and forts have unlimited ammo?

No, I dont think so. My guys just did a number on the initial wave of attackers so that by the time they were engaged in melee with the first wave, the immediate reinforcements were coming in 1 at a time.

I used my ranged units as the anvil guarding towers at the corners of walls, while I used my phalanx as the hammer coming down the walls from the gate house. Basically I just held them from breaking through my slingers etc while my Phalanx came from behind.

To be honest, I dont think I even looked at my ammo. It was pretty hectic all around.

I believe that the "invisible bonus tower missile troops" do. Try capturing a gate - and not physically clearing the walls by sending a unit from one side of a tower to the other - and then see what happens - it isn't pretty.

Archers definately seem to have more ammo this time around. I remember that I had to mod M:TW archers to have more ammo because I thought they ran out amazingly quickly. I don't think I've ever had a missile unit (ecept for javs and headhurlers) run dry in Rome.

Headhurlers?!?! Okay, that is just about the coolest thing I have ever heard. I was going to put off buying RTW for a while because I am still having so much fun with MTW's various mods, but I may have to reconsider that decision.

Suggestion: Somebody who's smarter than I am needs to come up with a headhurler "smiley-face" for the Org so we can insert it into our posts.

Lol, I remember when CA first announced head hurlers awhile ago all the Europa Barbarorum dudes were LIVID. I was able to live with them though.

Since I cant play battles I havent had one yet, but I remember in the demo, I was losing as the Carthies, and I remember seeing a unit of red hastati swarm over a hill, and just as they got to the top I heard the cry of 'ATTACK!" and heard them all yell out a warcry simultanouesly. THAT was an awesome moment. Really Last Samurai-ish, lol.
