When I heard that Rome would be in 3D, I thought that it would make the battles grander, & that's true. What I didn't realize was the it would also make it possible to appreciate small events in the battle that can be seen by bringing the camera in close. Seeing two units probe at each other as they face off; being able to see the exact point of impact as one unit charges into another; seeing one of my archers sneeze as he waits for the seige tower to come into his range; the stand-off I described in my "moments" thread which ended with the war dogs leaping into view to annihilate the enemy; watching my men twist head over heels as an elephant tosses them through the air :embarassed:

I'm enjoying the the change to 3D even more than I thought I would, & spending less time flying over the battlefield than I thought as well.

the stand-off I described in my "moments" thread which ended with the war dogs leaping into view to annihilate the enemy;

Will have to go look for that thread... but yes, sometimes it's really stunning. I was assaulting Thessalonica and there was one unit of hoplites who simply were not going down. They had their backs to the wall of one of the buildings and were simply destroying any unit I threw at them. I took a soldier's eye view of this phalanx, amazed at their staying power, and kept it while loosing my single unit of dogs on them.

About two minutes later there's a sudden baying behind my view. Then dogs, and dogs, and dogs! Dogs leaping, dogs pulling down hoplites, dogs snarling. It was simply stunning to watch -- frightening and stunning -- as the phalanx high-tailed it out of there.

Getting that level of detail and believeability at the same time as having 20,000 man battles is quite the achievement.
