View Full Version : It isn't the speed that is wrong.....

I have finally figured out what is causing the inhuman movement that has been driving me nuts in RTW. It isn't running speed, its the way individuals in the unit swarm into place when turning or regrouping. They "jump" into place at inhuman speeds, making unit reactions way too high, and looking extremely stupid. When actually moving forward, units look about right, but when they turn they are allowed to suddenly make bursts of speed that are ridiculous to behold. It has to do with the way that units move, not the speed. It might be to keep them in formation, but it has way too much of an effect on gameplay to be excusable.
This probably doesn't make any sense, but I'm just trying to point out what I see as the real problem.

You are correct about the erm Warping into position, but i do stil think the run speeds are too high. Altthough ive no problem playing at this speed it just looks stupid on the battlefield. So many problems........ I still have some fun playing it online, but it is a major let down. I hardly see anyone from vi or shogun on at all (and personally i dont blame them). Sp is great thoi really like it, and with the new speed mod u can get right in for a cinematic experience :D

LoL. Welcome back Swoosh So; good to see you've made the transition.
Hi Swoosh,
I feel as you do that the single player campaign is well done (SP bugs noted by others and hopefully will be fixed by CA) and fun now that I applied a 20% slowdown mod and use the 0.5 fighting speed slowdown as well. I play with large unit size. I also used that trick of going to the historical battles menu and then backing out to disable the timer, and that works for me as I have no timer in the battles. The 20% movement slowdown is a bit too much for walking and there is quite a bit of slip in the walking animation, so I might try 15% instead. The difficulty here is the big difference between walking and running speeds, and right now there is no way to adjust them independently.
I haven't played MP, and I'm not going to as long as it's left in its current state. Even if the major problems are fixed, I'm still put off by the high running speeds. I'd rather a little more emphasis on thinking, and a little less emphasis on speed of action. I'm not saying to eliminate speed of action as a factor as that has alway been a part of the game going all the way back to STW, but look at WE/MI v1.02. That game had quite fast cavalry, and it drove lots of players away from MP. The MP community went from over 100 online in STW v1.12 on weekends to less than 40 on weekends in WE/MI v1.02.
