View Full Version : Nitpicking question about Greek cities and Macedonia
Not that it's a very important question about a very important point of gameplay, and it didn't even ruined the game for me, but I was wondering, so, well, I just ask :
The Macedonian faction's symbol is an inverted V, while the Greek Cities faction has some kind of lightning bolt. What's disturbing me, is that Sparta is the capital of the Greek Cities faction, and the inverted V was the symbol of Sparta (the inverted V is the capital lambda, which stood for "Lacedemone", another name of Sparta ; it was on every spartan shield, and was the symbol of the city).
So, well, I'm wondering ^^

I was wondering that too ~;p
I would like to add in this thread that Greeks have the worst cavalry in the game. Aside from Greek Cavalry and Militia Cavalry(wich are decent) they don't have any other. And Generals Cavalry doesn't count becuase you can't recruit them unless in custom/MP game.

You know.. there is a file I think that has the faction symbols.. I think I saw it somewhere.. but I can't remember it (and there are SO MANY files that I can't find it anymore). BUt it may be possible to switch the symbols of the factions around I think.

Same reason why numidia has the eye of Ra/Re as its symbol? ~

Lakedaimon (or Lacedaemon) was the name of Sparta's mythical founder, and "Lakedaimonia" was later used as another name for Laconia, the region (not the city) where Sparta was located. Both words obviously derive from Lakedaimon's name. You're correct about the symbol and the shields.
IIRC, Macedonia's device was an 8-rayed sun. So where the lightning bolt came from or how Macedonia ended up with Lambda, I have no idea. ~ Regardless, I don't think you're nitpicking at all; its a good question.

Yeah thats messed up :dizzy2: I remeber clearly the inverted V from hellenic total war mod. It was yellow with a red background. And it belonged to lakedemonia.
Also i've been wondering why the spartan hoplites have a macedonian helmet(u know with the teardrop shape) thats really weird, as i "know" that they were not like that!!

Yea, that is really strange, especially considering that the "standard" archetypical hoplite is a spartan one. The greeks wore skirts, not dresses. ~;p

That comes from a Laconian statue of a Spartan officer. The Spartans wore red cloaks, and this officer has his wrapped around him with only one hand sticking out. Its clearly a cloak and not a robe, but apparently the image stuck. But cloaks were used like we use coats/jackets now, as a "windbreaker" against cold, weather, etc. I don't think the Spartans actually went into battle with their cloaks wrapped tight around their bodies.
This statue is the only image I've seen showing a Spartan bundled in his cloak. Most other contemporary representations show them wearing the exomis, a short-sleeved red tunic pinned at the left shoulder.
They were always wraped into their red chiton in order to conceal the blood of their wounds.
But they had a crested helmet, and a Lamda Λ on their shields. It is my favorite unit and my only disapointment of the game was that they are not exactly as they were in reality.
As far as for the Macedonian Lamd, it comes from the name of the next kin of Antigonos, Alexanders vice King who was L(Λ)isimahos.

At Time Commanders, it was said that the spartans used a red cloak, but threw them off before going into battle. Maybe this was too difficult to implement in the game?
Of course, everything what doctor Aryeh Nusbacher says has to be taken with at least a tiny bit of salt ~;p but still.
The symbol of the greek cities is IMO a device mean't to represent Zeus. Zeus was the god of the sky as well as the chief greek god and he hurled lightnig bolts hence the red lightnig bolt.
