View Full Version : why oh why do grouped units?
do what they bleeding want they behave like a gang of gypos on a mass robbing spree. i group them get a nice battle line and then what do they do just sit there. same when attacking enemy units try and pull them out and reattack again they just sit there being slaughtered what a complete pain in the arse even when deploying and after marching did these bstrds ever do battle drill i very much doubt it. christ knows what its going to be like with huge unit sizes :furious3:

Um...you have to tell your units what to do or yes, they will just stand in position. Maybe I'm missing something in this statement? ~

Cavalry should be able to disengage, infantry will have a hard time depending on how engaged it is. If you were fighting hand to hand combat, would you just turn your back on the guy whose trying to kill you just because your general told you? If you are moving them around a town, you have to make sure there is space for their current formation in the place you tell them to go or they won't move. Always use click and drag when moving around the streets so you can be certain they will go.
Maybe I missed something though because your message is hard to read. Try paragraphs, capital letters etc. We have them for a reason. Take your time when writing a message and make sure it's clear.

I know what he means. Some times the positions of grouped units changes. Before my archers are infront, then after a march or a clockwise wheel, the archers are behind. this gets really nasty some times, and makes it uncontroable.
If i group say cavalry using the G on the keyboard. Engage the enemy with each unit at various points.Example three cavalry units grouped attack the enemy units from behind. Then use the group command button to draw of to a safe place the group button dosent seem to work? And i am stuck with maybe one or more units still engaged with the enemy. Then i have to click the units still engaged individually to disengage. Therefore losing men i need not do as i am unable to draw of the units grouped as one all together. is this a bug or something.? ~:)

Yes. It's a very frustrating bug that's been known since the first day. I havent used groups at all since I ran into this. It seems to be in everyones game.

I have no end of trouble with groups too. The alt+rmb order is totally hit and miss; sometimes the units will move and keep their facing, but very often they will end up at crazy angles. I heard you have to have units grouped to issue grouped move orders like that sucessfully, but I still find exactly the same result.
I like the way RTW now uses a less finger breaking system for assigning groups to hotkeys. I hate the way you can't assign a single unit to its own number.
I love the way one of the preset group formations, single line, is actually useful(!!) this time around. I hate the way I have to redrag it almost every single time I want my infantry line to move becasue of the alt+rmb thing.
I hate the way you have to group units before you can order them to move and keep their relative positions. While this kind of order ususally leaves them at slanding angles with the flanks nicely pointed at the enemy at least the units maintain their relative positions.
I am rather enjoying this game, and so far I am managing to play without pause for the most part (something I never managed in STW and MTW, but then I am only using 10 unit armies right now), but these issues only make life harder. I nearly lost one battle because of the dodgy 'move with same facing' thing. The few times I do pause in battles now are usually because I need to move my army or fix the mess created by this issue.
I assume/hope these issues will be addressed with a patch or something?.
Its especially annoying to lose men for no reason except the units wont draw off. and as the enemy seem to move like grease lightning seem to attack from know were. Also even when moving from A to a B postion they cant keep formation. Also there abilty or lack of it to decide which weapon to use primary or secondary the time delay just allows the enemy units to swamp you. The game is good no doubt about it but these bugs just make it totaly frustrating experience at times. :embarassed:

Just remember to use SHIFT-1 after you group (g). This will make all your units on a single unit facing one direction. Feel free to try the others.
SHIFT-3 is DOuble line.
Cheers i will try that ~:)
I group only to move units. Before I commence fighting or independant moves, I ungroup them. I've also noticed a group does funky things if you re-issue new move orders while they are still moving. I first stop the group, then issue new command. Using it this way I've had no problems.
