Well, I finally got the game installed. I went to Best Buy and bought a new copy! I still have to take the bad copy back to CompUSA. I went to Best Buy, rather than just get a *replacement* from CompUSA, because I didn't want to risk that their whole shipment was bad.
After my previous experience, I knew not only did the Installer have a problem with either some software on my system and/or a flaky HD I have, but also that Autorun would crash mutliple times with the bad CDs, and the "IDrive" code would hang. IDrive is particularly nasty, as its *Process* would hang around long after RTW was quit or un-installed.
Upon my first attempt to install (the new copy), the installation immediately hung after a just a second. So, I rebooted, used my Process Viewer to make sure no remnants of RTW were lurking about, and then disconnected ALL my HDs and CD-ROMs except my system HD and one CD-ROM for installation. That did it! The game installed w/o a hitch. I then reconnected everything, booted, and started playing.
JFYI, I run my PC 24/7, and yesterday had a problem getting the game to load using the desktop shortcut, or, the executing the game executable directly. It simply would not load. I had to re-boot for the game to load.
Anyway, my suggestion is that, if you're having problems, take the damn game back!!!
Luck to All!!
