Having read though the whole of the guide for Rome total war, I have found nothing great to write about it. Don't get me wrong, it has lots of information but nothing that you can't get out of the game it self or manual. Thinking that it would have great strategy maps showing how to get the best out of an armies in the battlefield, like formations that are good to use up against different armies and how to go about using them against different units just didn't come across at all. Is it me or is it true in what I have said?

After looking at the Prima guid for a week, it finally struck me. I just payed an extra $15 for the games manual. That the problem with alot of games and guides in the era of small boxes and smaller in-box documention. The strategy guides are more like the real game manuals, and the game manuals or more like a reference chart.

This Prima guide is particularly bad though. It has unit basic unit stats, but less info about them than can be found in game (and certainly less than was in the MTW guide), while the campaign section simply explains how to play the game (i.e. left click on unit to select, right click on target to attack, etc.) without any real strategy hints.

I'm glad that I'm not the only one that is saying the same thing about the "Prima official game guide". Buy it if you really want to but it is a total waste of money.

Yep, I usually wait for the guys here at the Org to write one. It's far far better and will actually give you formations. Check the M:TW guides here to see what I mean. Best of all it's free ~:)

Yeah, I too await the great guides that spring up around here for R:TW.

And once you've mastered the game, they are handy to give to friends that are new players, to set them on the right tracks.

I agree that the prima guides are usually REALLY bad. Of the other forums i frequent, the only guide that is discribed as good is the Diablo 2 guide, and that was released a long time ago. But the new guides, such as the ones for Homeworld 2 or even MTW, are described as far less useful than a page of the forums :)
