I know that how Egypt is portrayed in RTW is far from how they actually were. However, I actually have no idea what they were like during that time frame. Any good articles I should look at, or perhaps someone would be willing to give me a brief description?

Thanks.

They were another Successor Kingdom(Diadochi?) of Alexander the Great. Not surprisingly, they fought like he did(pikemen and heavy cavalry, elephants and horses). Their armies were recuited almost exclusively from the ruleing elite, Macedonian expats, at least until the Battle of Ralphia, I think. Then their Macedonia fighting population was so depleted that they started raising hosts from the native egyptians.

Just look at the Seleucids in the game. Plus a couple more native archer units. No Pharaoh headresses or heavy scythe chariots though...

For Historical info regarding the dinasty:

Ptolemaic Dynasty (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ptolemaic_dynasty)

For picture depictions just compare this:

New Kingdom Egypt 1550BC-1070BC (http://www.dbaol.com/armies/army_11_figure_1.htm)

RTW is depicted as New Kingdom Egypt 1550BC-1070BC, regarding culture and looks, with some fantasy units added. Before the Ptolemaic period there were:

Libyan Egyptian 946BC-712BC (http://www.dbaol.com/armies/army_20_figure_1.htm)

Kushite Egyptian 712BC-664BC (http://www.dbaol.com/armies/army_22_figure_1.htm)

Saitic Egyptian 660BC-525BC (http://www.dbaol.com/armies/army_29_figure_1.htm)

These periods were intermingled with Assyrian and Persian authority, before Alexander's intervention.

Early Ptolemaic 320BC-275BC (http://www.dbaol.com/armies/army_42a_figure_1.htm)

Later Ptolemaic 275BC-40BC (http://www.dbaol.com/armies/army_42b_figure_1.htm)

So, you see, it's really ridiculous CA's depiction of Egypt in 270BC.

Very interesting indeed. Thanks guys. I like that much more than the out of place Egypt that is in the game. Would be very cool if someone would make a 'real Egypt' or 'Ptolemaic' mod...

No it wouldnt. Lets see, the Seleucids, the Macedonians, the Greeks.. how many more Greek cultures you need? For gods sake I may love hisotrical accuracy, but I'm very glad Egypt was shown in a Pharonic look. Would have been utterly boring and best left as a minor faction if they were shown as a bunch of damn Greeks.

Yeah, that would be about as horrible as having 4 identical Roman factions, or 3 near identical barbarian factions. It could be worse though... Imagine if there was a game where a majority of the factions were virtually identical Catholic factions...

Nope. You think that because you don't really know the Ptolemaic Kingdom. It had a varied degree of culture and units from other Hellenistic factions (the Diadochi). CA's version of the Hellenistic factions doesn't really diferentiate them.

ROTFL :laugh4: :joker: Great reply!!!

BTW, you might want to check this thread. It's trying to solve the Barbarian factions incorrect depiction, before tackling the Egyptians:

That what I mean! If CA did make it "historical" they wouldnt differentiate at all. Then there would be virtually no point to playing Egypt.

Aymar,

I gave the thread a quick scan. Lots of good information there. I'll have to go over it in more detail tomorrow. I can't wait to see that mod when its done, especially when Egypt is changed. I tried to start a campaign as them, but I just couldn't get over how wrong it all was and had to quit.

Ah well, guess I'll resume pulling my hair out whilst desperately trying to hold Seleucia together. :surrender:

Nope. You misunderstood me. Reread my answer. I said that CA hadn't differentiated enough. If it had been done Historically, the factions would feel different, although beeing all Hellenistic.

Let's hope we can release it soon enough. It's a massive rework of the game, not just in units and cultures, but also in gameplay.

I don't think you're alone...
