Okay, I just started out as Carthage -> immediately took Messana on first turn, Elephants worked great, but Cavalry roxxored even more... :charge:

OK, my question is:

TEMPLES!

Baal, Tanit, Milgart:

Baal = Jupiter-lie, +5 Law/Happyness

Tanit: +5 Happyness, +1 Food/Production for Farms

Milgart: +5 Happyness, Increase Tradeable goods.

What Temple do you suggest for the initial provinces?

I think the conquered Roman City of Messana should get a Baal Temple to keep public order high, while Lilybaeum and Carthage should get a temple related to TRADE perhaps (Milgart?) to gain a maximum of food.

But what are the special boni of the higher temples? Anything especially precious to get with Baal or so?

If you check your building browser in the construction it will show you in detail the upgrade benefits of each temple. One of them is required to build the Sacred Bands.

I'd guess Baal, but I'm not 100% sure.

On 2nd Carth campaign. I am building Baal temples everywhere. They do two things:
1. Max increase in law/happiness to combat the squalor problem, and
2. Required to build your best infantry, the Sacred Band, permitted at level four temple. You dont even need a barracks if you get the biggest Baal temple to pump out a Sacred Band Phalanx every other turn.

The other temples are ok, especially trade goods for more cash, but the plus to farming just improves population growth which gets you more squalor faster. These other temples do not give you any special troop types.

I agree, decided to go mainly with Baal, especially in troublesome cities.
