View Full Version : Beseiging a tough enemy -attack & fade?
I'm currently beseiging an Egyptian city with a stack of 20 units in it & I've been having trouble dealing with the Egyptian forces in battle.
I'm thinking of going into battle, killing some guys with dogs/archers, then withdraw & fight again next turn.
If I withdraw, does that count as a loss? Will it break the seige?

yes it will breack the siege.
Also make sure there is no coast to your back or you will lose your whole army because it looks at it as there is no retreat

Just starve them out, assaulting such a force is suicide.
I had a thracian city revolt with OVER 20 stacks of catapults, archers, falxmen, all sorts of powerful units. How the hell did the peasants organise all that military might under my chin?
There was no way I assaulted that city, so I just besieged them. 5 turns later and their army had decreased dramatically due to the plague.
Usually the city will get the plague and its units will be severly depleted - and the plague usually dissappears by the time you've taken the city.
What really annoys me is how a "draw" when the defender sallies breaks the siege too :furious3:
Oh man this game is :furious3: d
I just made an assault.
Fafed around a smidgen on the walls but rushed in the infantry soon enough.
Timer ran out with about 10secs before I would have killed the last egyptian & my whole 20unit stack has dissapeared!
WTFH?!?!?!?!
I lost max about 1/4 of the force & they were besieging so they still had heaps of movement.
Seriously thinking of abandoning play till there is a proper patch :stars: :end:

Ahh the good ole battle timer.
I hate it. When playing a large city assault in one of my campaigns it took me forever to break the walls and fight my way to the plaza for the end brawl with all the enemies.
As the enemy got surrounded the timer went down, and expired. Two Men still lived and it was a defeat!! :furious3:
I wish there was an option to turn the stupid thing off!

I couldnt find the thread where I read this so I thought I'd ask it here (in a thread about seiges). Phalanx units cant enter the towers on walls and presumably cant enter seige towers, climb ladders, or sap (and rightly so). So how do phalanx-building factions that dont build sword wielders of any type assault a city wall? As the Selucids, am I supposed to use lightly armoured archers or peltasts as an assault force for a city wall? This seems to be a serious flaw in gameplay.
Peasants make fine and cheap sappers.
There is a utility available at http://www.twcenter.net that will turn the battle timer off. If it is driving you nuts, do something about it, don't just whine.

That is wrong. What they ca'nt do is perfom there phalanx and they will attack with swords and shields. Of course they seem to suck when fighting in this manner though. Now it could be you have to take them out of phalanx formation before commitiing the act but they can do this.

Now I definitely need to find that thread since it was confirmed by a CA member that pikemen couldnt enter a tower on a stone wall.

Found it. https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/showthread.php?t=36827
Pikemen can climb seige towers but cant enter wall towers (hmmm?). In his last post, Hoof who was playing as the Selucids, made exactly the same point as I did.
