It seems that they are the first to attack me rather than neutral factions!

Why on earth is that?

I'm not sure, they could just see you as weak/hoping for a suprise attack. Or you might be allying with neighbors so its just coincidental they're heading your way first. My only non-Roman alliance has been unbroken so far. As Scipii I allied with Numidia since we're both fighting Egypt off and on. Its stayed allied with me for like 20 years now.

Its probably a combination of the fact they have a larger military than you and share a border with you.

The AI is generally quite good when it comes to keeping alliances, provided your around equal or greater strength.
I had an alliance with the Dacians for over 100 years and the Spanish for over 50 before I unfortunately had to engulf them into my empire. :)

watch them - they just broke a 50 year alliance (no idea why) and have beseiged Thapsus while my armies are off fighting the Gauls or Egyptians. Have one army in for repair & refit at Syracuse so they have the task of giving them a few kicks - have to wait a year though unfortunately.

Well, I have been only betrayed once (by Carthage), though it was a really stupid betrayal (a single-city faction against my mighty empire ? 0_o).

The Seleucids are faithfully allied since one of the very first turn of the game, and show no signs of attacking (though they have a big army standing idle).

I also noticed a bad habit of the AI when allying with them, whenever they have a huge army near an undefended city, they conquer it no matter how big your empire is... its pretty annoying.

Then why do they accept to be allies in the first damn place?

To lure you into a false sense of security. Every once in a while declare peace, it confuses the hell out of your enemies! ~D

It just seems like, at any one time in the campaign, you are at war with at least 2 people....

if you leave a larger neighbour neutral they probably won't declare war on you. If you get an alliance with them 2-3 turns later they will attack one of your cities! :furious3:
