I installed RTW and started playing right away. Awesome game, and I just won the short Imperial Campaign today as the Julii. When in the game, it runs great. I have no problems with the campaign map, and my system is fast enough to handle the battle field graphics, except when there are a lot of archers shooting smoking arrows, then my framerate drops a little.

The problem I am having is when I first start the game. The Intro movie plays kind of slow, and the sound cuts in and out. At first I thought it was the sound of the men marching, but it is actually the sound having problems. Sound is fine once I am in the game though. Troop rally scenes before the battles play fine.

Additionally, the main menu is very hard to navigate because it seems to be bogging down my system or something. The demo worked fine, but there background of the menu was just a picture, whereas in the full game, there is a video playing. I noticed during the install that it asked me to install Windows Media format 9, and I did, and I think that is the problem. The mouse cursor jumps around and is sluggish as if the framerate was very low, but the video plays smooth. Also, after I fight a battle and then go back to the main menu, all the button icons are gone and have turned into white squares. Sometimes the icons will come back, but I usually have to exit and restart the game in order to see the factions icons, etc, and that gets annoying.

I don't really care about the sound in the intro movie, but I would like to fix the game menu problem.

My system specs:

AMD XP 1800+
512mb PC2100 DDR
Radeon 8500LE (Omega 2.6.37)
Soundblaster PCI 128D (onboard chipset)
Windows 98SE (DX 9.0c)
Fedora Linux Core 2

PS, I know Win98 is ancient, but I only use it for games and because XP is too expensive, so don't tell me to upgrade to XP. That's why I use linux: Free, and now viruses!

I sort of had a similar problem with the video animations. It doesn't seem to work without stuttering. However once I get into the regular game it works fine. I would like to see the intros for the factions though. I suspect like you that it is a problem with windows media player. I'm running XP if that's any help though.

I hate to say it, but you probably need to upgrade to XP. Like you, I didn't want to - I couldn't face handing over money for an operating system that needs you to reactivate it every time you update your hardware. In the end, I was forced to. Some games that came out didn't support 98, and even for those that did there were DirectX and Media Player issues.

It's annoying to have to admit it, but XP solved a lot of game performance issues for me.
