View Full Version : What does it take for men to gain experience?
First of all, experience gain was wildly different in the prologue compared to the acutal campaign (on very hard c, medium b).
In the prologue, I'd get units chevron after chevron, and they wouldn't lose any exp either from retraining.
In the real thing, my guys can kill scores of the enemy while losing no one in their unit and gain no experience :charge:
I'm just looking for any insight on what causes experience gains. :) I'll try to check a few things out tonight.

First of all kills, raw kills…
More you kill with the unit, more experience you get.
But there are more experience factors, for example: in one battle I put 1 unit of Hestati to hold a bridge against gaul horde. By the end of the battle there were only 10 soldiers left alive. In post battle screen I saw that they killed about 100 men and they got 2 !! experience points (most of the killing were done by archers and veleties).
On other occasion a unit of hestati killed about 200 and got 1 experience point only.
So I guess there are many more factors to exp points than only killing ratio – I am still unaware what they are…

I was actually watching this with raw recruits yesterday. I had 4 groups of archers. 3 of the groups scored around 200 kills each in a battle, the last scored over 450! Thats the only one that gained only 1 chevron :embarassed:
I am glad that experience is *really* experience in this game and not "valour" that the general can affect so much i.e turning fresh troops into valour 4 or 5 ones like in MTW....
I just love roaming the steppes with my 5 or 6 triple silver and gold horse archers. When you see those little chevrons you remember all the battles they were in. Really adds to the game, a good change IMO

this is probably a 'fake' exp gain.
every man has an exp value. the game shows you the average for the entire unit. THe last guys on the bridge were probably the toughest guys from the unit in the first place.
afaik, kills are the only way to get exp.
at least that's the way it worked in mtw
Certain temples and the like can give experience when men are trained. I captured a temple to Nike in Greece that gives my guys two bronze chevrons. There are others.

Yes of course. But I believe the OP is referring to in-battle activity that will lead to exp gain. Not exp level granted at construction by temple or other building bonus.
It looks like you might get valor from killing people while routing as well. Would this be a change from MTW?
One of my units killed 334 people and lost 0 men and got an experience level. They were mostly mowing down exhausted routers.

xp level is based upon individual units. For example if i have 2 chevrons means that the average xp level of all my units is 2. It doesn't mean that all my units are 2 xp exactly.
At least that was how MTW worked. When u retrain a gold chevron with 10 units left, his rank could drop because of the inclusion of vets+greenhorns.

What does it take for men to gain experience?
Well, you probably need to date more than one or two women in your life.

yeah, and try not to date women from different demographics and ethnicity - adds variety
Either it was a glitch in the game or it is programmed in. Theres also been there done that exp points. I had 1 battle, I believe it was 1 rebel unit en route so I fout the rebel unit and had a full 20 guys but only used archers and 1 unit of cavalry against these guys but somehow 4 units had gained exp. And they gained exp without killing or taking losses they did not even move throughout the whole battle.
But anyways it seems that they get a a small bonus everytime they go into battle.
