I'd like to start by saying I'm a big fan of TW, but with Rome I have had nothing but problems.
1st - during the prologue I played 40turns or so and on the way to my next turn I get a CTD.
2nd - start new campaign and I reach 223 BC and during the AI's turn I get CTD again. I had no problems in battles and I had many.
3rd - tried installing patch even though it doesn't fix this problem and it won't install. I put all my games on my raid drive, that is not default, and never had a prob before with TW's patches. I even browse and select the data folder and still nothing.
activision support did not solve the prob. I have everything up to date. I need a patch to fix my problems but with the first patch not installing properly I don't know what to do. Went to all forums, FAQ's, and no one has any answers. I read and have done everything that someone posted on what to do to your computer before installing Rome.
WinXP SP2 DX 9.0c
pentium 2.4 abit IC7 mobo
ati 9500 pro 4.9 cats
2 WD raptors in RAID 0
Sorry can't help you. I've not had one CTD yet.

Yeah, I haven't seen any crashes either, even after leaving it running for several hours. I think I've seen some people mention that rolling back SP2 has fixed crash problems for them.

I shouldn't have to roll back and SP2 fixes security holes so I dont think it is an option. Other then the 3 probs the game runs fine. I even reloaded a previous save and it crashed during the AI turn at 222 BC. Anything special happen during the turn at 222 BC??

Yeah, but I see that as Microsoft's fault, not CA's. RTW is not the only program with problems under SP2.

FWIW, I'm getting many CTD's (never had a single one with MTW or the exp or STW).
I look at this way ... at least it fixes the memory leak.
But I'm running W2K.

I've had only one CTD (besides the MP ones).
As long as I quicksave each turn it's not a big deal - I find that as long as my disks are error free, defragged, and all drivers and patches are up to date things go smoothly

If the game is running fine on the majority of machines then it isnt CA's fault. Still it is up to CA to fix the probs with SP2 not MS fix the probs with Rome. It is just very frustrating.
This sort of illustrates why I'm running Windows 2000 at this late date. I haven't seen any compelling reason to go to XP, and every game I install runs peachy-keen. I'm sorry you're having so many problems. The worst I've been able to summon is a minor sound bug, which is probably Creative's fault. Their drivers are ... mebbe not-so-great ...

I wouldnt be so sure of that.. You are right in that it's CAs task to make the game compatible with the most common windows versions, but we cant honestly except them to keep up with all the windows bugs / problems MS introduces with every new version / patch.
Other than that, i haven had any 'regular' crashes, and got about 2 random CTDs so far (both came just before starting a battle if i can remember correctly - loading the game solved the issue each time), which i consider acceptable compared to the over 100 hours i spent playing the game.
I wish you good luck solving your problems.

Uninstalled SP2 still the same prob. Never had one crash with MTW. You can't tell me that this game wasn't rushed out the door too early, like most games nowadays. I woulld rather wait and have things run right. I can even play doom3 on my machine with no probs with high settings.
Things just don't feel right in the game like other TW games. It could just be that it is because I can't continue my campaign. But weird things are happening in the game and you can't tell me they aren't.
I've got XP SP2, haven't had any crashes or any problems at all.

im running twin raid drives and the only ctd`s i got were when i tried to play online, that was fixed by downloading the patch. the main problem ive had with the game is scatty unit behaviour which i dont think the patch fixed...

From what the developers said, not only was this game not 'rushed out the door', but they got an additional year or so to work on things. Considering the ammount of different systems and different configurations people are using, you cant except to be compatible with everything.
I would say, you are among the unlucky few, who have a faulty / incompatible hardware or software setup.
I hope you manage to solve your problems. You could try a lot of things, like reinstalling windows, and stuff like that (reinstalling windows solved a lot of problems on my computer - although none of those were CTD related)

I'm running RTW with SP2, and I've not had a crash after about 100 hours of play. The only problem I've had was with the demo interferring with MP, but removing the demo and reinstallking RTW sorted that out.
I've played a couple of MP games with acceptable lag, at 2v2. I haven't had a chance to try 3v3 yet.
I think they have put out a good product, and provided the MP patch very quickly.
