hordes of silent diplomats?

So every turn i get to watch several foreign diplomats begin the animation to open negotiations with me, only to have nothing happen. on one turn, i had 7 spanish diplomats surround my diplomat, and chat with him, while 4 thracian diplomats did the same to my capital, all to no avail. this slows the game down, and doesnt seem to serve a purpose. my solution thus far has been assassins, but i cant keep up. any idea what is causing this silent horde?

I always assumed they are attempting bribes and cancelling due to high costs. Just a guess, I notice the same thing constantly.

Yep they are bribing away. Just assassinate them. Problem solved.

i guess that makes sense. the spanish did manage to bribe my diplomat. i guess the 7 they had surrounding him werent enough.

damn, i hate them. i keep telling them that im not interested in their religion, but they keep knocking on my door day after day.

I keep 3-4 highly trained assassins in the core of my empire and regularly eliminate every diplomat that comes through...less time waisted during the AI movement and seldom any bribes to worry about.
