I amazed l haven't found this out sooner.
Where is the sun guys. Well we don't need it but maybe it would be awesome for the expansion pack. And it won't be only eye-candy. An army that is facing the sun will have some penatlies like archers and gunmen accuracy will be reduced. And that will even more the attacker and defender. Also defender will have the job to watch from cav flanks in these poor visibility.
Clouds making the sun dissapear for some seconds or more would be awesome.
What do u think?

Isnt it in the sky? http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/biggrin.gif

I think that it could be quite difficult to do. What they could do though as someone else mentioned is have a penalty after a certain time in hot weather.

It's a very nice idea, though it would slow the game down like hell, unless you have a 2ghz Pentium 4 and and GeForce 3 Ultra http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif

I think there already is a penalty for hot weather... certainly I have noticed my men going from Fresh to Quite Fresh without actually moving.

I have played Zelda:Ocarina of time the best game ever. The system is on is N64 which a 92.8MHz processor. The grpahics were awesome. The game had a day to night feature. The sun glare was amazing, sun was moving, lighting was changing during day. It was so perfect. Why can't in be done on Shogun? It doesn't need any power at all.We better to someone that knows bout these things. http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/rolleyes.gif

One of the differences between the PC and consoles is that on consoles is the standarised hardware. But on the PC with all the different systems in processing power and the like. That is one of the reasons I think why it would be difficult for Shogun, especially together with all the units fighting on the screen which already pushes some computers.

Well computer ain't pushed in Shogun by the processor. I have a PIII 500MHz, 64MB ram and a Voodoo 3 2000 and during gameplay the processor never works 100%. in multiplayer is the modem that ruins the game. I m sure it will be an easy thing to do.
And with games not lasting more than 30 minutes the sun can be static to make things easier.

Note that the STW tactical engine already revolves around the Sun (so to speak http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/wink.gif) - the timer (that bane of every camper) counts the time until the sun goes down and it gets too dark to fight. Every battle lasts for a day, max, and having an actual sun in the background, falling lower and lower as the day draws to a close and the victor rides into the sunset... That would be cool. Even though the lens flare effects would kill the graphics engine. http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif

(BTW, theforce-san - I took the liberty to delete your doublepost. I hope I chose the unnecessary one http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/wink.gif)

I agree. I'm off to buy myself a reproduced Nodachi, and then fly over to Britain. I suggest we assemble somewhere first, then march in ordered formation towards the CA headquarters. If needs be, we'll take their Daimyo hostage until such time as sun effects are implemented!

The "lens flare" effect is not only unneccesary, but also unrealistic. So I'll gladly pass on that. However, a more general glare effect when looking into the sun would be quite nice, as would the ability to see the sun in the sky at such times when it would appear there.

I agree with my wise friend Baka, lens flare would be daft given we aren’t looking through a lens of any sort at the map, a glare effect would be reasonable though. Also, changing light and shadows would be neat, it would be easier to hide in forest at dusk than at noon etc. also, if mist evaporated during the day, if it was summer, would be cool. I also don’t see that this would take much in the way of processor cycles…

If you pay attantion you will see that l ve said that and all told me nope. They don't want lighting to change when is morning and all all the sun to move. They idea is for a static sun since in 20 minute games (most of them last thi slong) sun can't be moved so much that you will notice the difference in its position. A glare that is only eye-candy whould be useless since noone found this out. A glare though that would make life a bit hard for the defender though and even things up would be great.

Force, why would you want to listen to them? They don't really know that much more than you and sticking a sun in there wouldn't be such a big deal. Zelda rules.

Why would it only last twenty minutes, I think that at the slowest rate of play time probably passes at around four or five times real speed in terms of distant travelled etc, from deployment to time up I think that we can assume that a couple of hours passes at least, that is enough to see a change in the light.
Perhaps when you get to choose the day of attack you would see the battlefield and time passing before you quickly, the sun spinning in the sky, the weather changing dynamically, as mist and fog shroud hills in the morning before boiling off in the afternoon, clouds building on the horizon to give you a suggestion of what is coming next. Perhaps snow would thaw and fall as you waited for the ideal moment. The usual four or five days could pass and at any time you could choose the attack button, with corresponding changes in sun height and other environmental concerns.

Also, as you waited it would be cool to see the peasants go about there business in the little villages and monasteries that dot the landscapes, and then flee as your force round the hill….
