It seems that despite the fact that RTW is now out, alot of people are already weighing in on where the TW series should go next. In my opinion, I see several potential subjects that could be done, and (seeing as how I don't know how to/or cannot poll) figured I'd list them below as well as some of the benefits of each.
1. Conquest of the Americas:
- There were at least a half dozen or so major colonizing powers, as well as several strong native powers. So, you've got a nice spread from which to choose.
- The beginning of this period roughly corresponds with the end of MTW
- Missions could be assigned by the kings of Europe (kind of serving as "absentee popes".
- The land area is obviously extremely varied (and extremely large)
- The whole concept of building a colony would be another game aspect from the strategic point of view (whether for religious purposes, military purposes, or to increase wealth).
2. The Mongol Invasion:
- The scope of the map could include virtually all of Eurasia.
- The unit variety would be absolutely immense.
- One could play either as the mongols or one of many many nations that would eventually be influenced by the mongols.
- A goal of this type of game could be the spread of one's civilization (not always via conquering).
3. Ancient Lands:
- Instant fan base (as via AOE and others)
- Again, you've got a good spread of both cultures and units, as well as a large strategic map (the middle east, mediterranean, parts of india)
I don't really have a preference, and am actually still trying to figure out how to load RTW, so I figured I'd hand out my 2 cents. In my opinion, any game that might eventually be made will obviously need broad customer appeal, a large number of potential unit types, and the ability to adequately function using the TW engine and TW "idea" (this last part meaning something recognizable as still being part of the TW series.
