I wish hendrix had been more careful with his doses so we could see how he evolved.. im sure he only would have gotten better. :disappointed:

My 3 favourite guitarists, in no particular order-

Jimmy Page
Dave Gilmour
Jimi Hendrix

I would say that Pagey just about edges it, due to the fact that he's written about 3 million of the best riffs ever...

I adore Gilmour's melodicism and soundscapes, however. He can make me feel more than any other guitarist.

Ah, now, bass...

I'm a really big Jaco Pastorius fan.

Anyone who grew up in the late 70s/early 80s... is there anyone new out there these days who can compete with the sheer notes-per-second velocity of guitarists like Joe Satriani, Yngwie Malmstein, Kirk Hammett, (and even good old Eddie VH in his prime), etc...?

I lost track of the guitar scene when I got married (ten years ago), but the few times I catch "rock" stations these days, they're full of bands that sound like Exact copies of each other. And it sounds like someone in marketing said, "Say goodbye to solo guitar..."

Thoros of Myr
10-14-2004, 12:07
Tim Reynolds is pretty fast and a good soloist.

I agree with you that many sound like copies these days and soloing is not so important anymore. It's been over 10 years since there was any explosion of good rock guitarists and originality. There is still good ones out there, you have to look...hard...as far as rock/alt rock guitarists anyway, don't know about metal, I stopped following it when it became only about huge power chords and screaming :)

Orda Khan,

Robert Johnson you say.

My sweetie has done several paintings of him. I like this one the best.

Quite the life this guy had.

Big King Sanctaphrax
10-15-2004, 21:09
He's probably the only guitarist named here who supposedly sold his soul to the devil, and inspired a film starring Daniel-san from Karate kid...

Orda Khan
10-15-2004, 21:41
........And Daniel san can thank Ry Cooder for providing the guitar work for his part in the movie. Cooder has to be one of the very finest slide exponents, truly amazing sounds that guy can achieve.

What a talented lady you have there Beirut ~:) ......I take it she likes his music also? That would make you doubly lucky.
What a life indeed and I think it would be fair to say he was an absolute B*****D but to coin a modern phrase, he 'owned' when it came to guitar. Hendrix, I suppose, would be the nearest to him talent wise for his ability to sound like more than one guitar. Too many latter day guitarists need to let us know just how good they are yet all they do is clutter and detract from the simplicity of music from the heart.

See if you guys can get hold of Paul Rishell's 'Devil got my woman' from his CD 'Swear to tell the truth'.....Wonderful guitar work on a Style 'O' National Steel and the most haunting vocals

I must say the only present day guitarist that I like that weren't around in the 60s or 70s is Jack White and the Edge. I just can't at all stand today's music.
I'm kind of sad I'm the only one who mentioned Keith... sure he looks dead, but I love his guitar work.

Orda Khan
10-16-2004, 01:00
You ain't sad Steppe Merc that 'cat' found his inspiration by listening to Robert Johnson...

Eric Clapton though I think Hendrix was more talented I like Claptons style better. Al Dimeola is another great one along with John Mc Clauglin and Carlos Santana.

Stanley Clarke was a favorite bassist of mine (love the old-school funky stuff). Tony Levin (King Crimson and a slew of others projects) and Patrick O'Hearn (Zappa, Missing Persons, and his own stuff) are also favorites. The name is eluding me, but I really liked the bassist who played on Chick Corea's Elektric Band albums ... anyone remember his name?

Must admit I'm terrible at remembering names. Kate Bush was working with a bassist who did some great fretless work on Never for Ever, on "Breathing" and "Egypt." Very lyrical, sinuous, and melodic ... neat stuff.

One of my favorite bassists is actually a local guy I knew well--Nick Willow. At 17 or so he toured Japan with David Sanborn. He'd only been playing for a few years--one of those prodigies that just takes naturally to an instrument. A brilliant combination of technical chops and musical intuition and artistry--a rare combination these days, it seems.
