I always wondered about that, and since I'm about to attack the other romans now, I want to ask you guys. It would suck If I have to demolish a temple of Mars or Jupiter and rebuild my own temples (bleh, Saturn) just because I'm Scipii. If you can upgrade the other Roman temples, what about the Greeks, Barbarians, etc.? Can Macedonia upgrade Greek temples after capturing a Greek city? They should all worship the same gods right?
Btw, I think there should be a Jewish culture, where the is a "pantheon" level Temple of Solomon in Jerusalem whose destruction should cause instant revolt(of the People's Front of Judea of course). I always squirm when I see that Egyptian temple in Jerusalem(just like i do when i see head hurlers, wardogs, or any egyptican unit...).
No. You're strictly restricted to your own buildings.
On a similar note does anyone know if temples of a different culture still work for your faction after you capture a city.
I have captured cities with quite highly developed temples in them to other dieties offering +20% Happiness etc. But never really sure if they are working or not. I think they are, in which case it become a bit awkward timing the imposition of the state religion.
They do work, but as you can't upgrade them, and as they work to sustain the culture penalty, it's most often better to destroy them and replace them with your own.

Nope, you can upgrade but only some of them. When I took Egyptian towns as a Selucid I was able to upgrade some of the temples. I think it has something to with wether or not the benefits are similar. So the Julii Vulcan is similar to the Macedonian Haephasteus(sp).
Best to check first before destroying everything. Obviously if the temple is maxed out then oyu can't.
By destroying a temple and building one of yours in the same turn you - the cultural difference and + the similarity in one go - two birds with one stone.
Except when the Enemy temple is something like the Temple of Artemis, which gives +4 shooting weapon upgrade for units trained there. I'd not want destroy that one.
Some of the Barbarian temples are interchangable and some of the African temples. Also is the same with the Greek/Roman cultures.
Heres how culture penalty works and was mentioned by Jerome(CA) and I'll elaborate a little more.
The governors palace building has the hugest effect and if your Roman you'll notice as soon as you upgrade the governors building, the town will change style and same with other cultures. If all the buildings are of your culture except for the governors building there seems to a be a minumum of 20 percent culture penalty no matter what.
Any building you build of your culture will reduce the culture penalty, even rodes and city wall upgrades will counter the culture penalty. So when I take a town if it will not be expanding soon and there are no other buidings to build I start razing buildings and replacing them to reduce the culture penalty.
So when you run across that really nice temple you want to keep you can reduce the culture penalty to zero but will only occur once you have built enough of your own cultures buildings to reduce that effect.
As Roman you can upgrade Greek Athena temples to Jupiter...
