i am starting a forest battle with a family member that i bribed from another faction. as my army moves forward in the forest, the units get bunched up. right before the 2 armies come into contact, i charge my phalanx units. immediately, my general goes down. as i'm trying to figure out what, i realized that his bodyguard unit had been bunched up with one of the phalanx units and when it charged, he literally got a spear in the back. it was hilarious. i guess my native troops didn't take too kindly to being led by a traitorous foreigner.

These things happen. I've heard from reliable sources that some of the people who show up if we ever mobilize the army won't have to wait for any enemies to kill them. Some officers just know how to make themself hated.

I don't think that is possible (in game.. ~;) )...

Friendly units will not make melee attacks against each other... The only ways I know to get friendly kill are firstly the obvious missile fire and secondly elephants running amoke (chariots can also run amoke but don't know if they can cause friendly casualties)... Note that even if you charge chariots or elephants through friendly units (not running amoke) they will just knock a lot of people down, not kill anyone...

Are you sure your general was not close to the enemy? I have seen generals being the first to die at the points of an enemy phalanx (not even attacking it, just getting to close when passing in front of it)...

bob,

the enemy troops were not in range yet. he had velites and i had slingers. slingers have a greater range, and mine had not begun to fire yet. so we weren't in missile range of each other. as soon as i charged my phalanx though, my general had the death cutscene. no enemy troops were near, and my missile troops were in front of my general. if it wasn't my phalanx then i don't know what could possibly have killed him.

If they use "realistic" friendly fire for missiles, why not melee? it'd be even easier to model, I would think. actually about the same - just another weapon tip to keep track of.
