View Full Version : A blast from the past
I just came across an old thread discussing how speech will be implemented in RTW (this was way b4 the game came out)
https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/showthread.php?p=394597#post394597
Here is my contribution from this thread
Quote "I would settle for sub-titles and a bit of shoping music in the background. At least we know we wont get american speaking Romans:)"
Ok i hold my hands up on this one and admit I got it completly and utterly WRONG
Maybe you should read Giljay smith's post in that column and then think twice about what you posted
Hi,
I read quite a bit of the post and Giljay posts state how things tend to work when doing voicing for games. That still dosnt alter the fact that I got it so wrong back then even tho i had the benifit of reading giljay post b4 making my assumption about not geting american accents for romans.I thought it was just amusing how wrong oine could be. I was just so damed sure back then even after reading Giljay post that romans would be well, more roman :)
well, the voice that really kills the experience/day for me is the one telling about reinforcements and gates being broken... Grrrrrrrrrrr...

The guy doing the Tutorial is great - Marcus - but I can't say many of the others really make the game more immersive. Better without the others think.

The voices in the game are great! Why??
Because they are all Aussies!
Yep, I'm sure of it, I'm pretty sure CA has an office in Brisbane (city in Oz) so they must have done the voices there. Marcus sounds a lot like Russell Crowe in 'Gladiator' I reckon, I think the aussie accent really suits. Victoria the map advisor is even more clearly aussie.
marcus and victoria - good voices yes,
even the greeks and macedonians are believable,
but WHO IS RESPONSIBLE for the pimply faced geek that tries to tell me what to do on the battlefield
"send them to attack and dis-hearten the enemy"
and when he squeals "the walls are broken" "all rome will be amazed" etc etc etc i want to reach into my PC and throttle him,
Honestly, if that pimple faced geek was here, within reach, he'd be a eunuch by now....
why oh why is there no option to turn him and his geeky squealing OFF!!!
Yeah....some of those Roman "They are attacking us!" sound effects (especially the one done by pimply-faced geek) really annoy me

I normally like female Aussie accents but Victorias' get on my fecking nerves now.Probably just associate it with the annoying pop-up.

I figured the Rome menu voice was just a joke sorta thing. Like the bumbling little legionnarie who gets excited about everything and is new.
As far as I am concerned the voices as the single ingredient of RTW that went seriously wrong.
Whoever, thought that the noise they make was in anyway acceptable needs their brains testing. If I had the skills I would ditch the whole lot immediately and replace them with something more appropriate.
Hopefully, some kind soul with more knowledge will come up with a Mod that does just that.
Its like designing the coolest sports car in the world and spraying it lime green and sticking a pair of bright red fluffy dice on the on the rear view mirror.
I'm playing the game thinking WHY? WHY? WHY?

greif, i hope not,
then again...i do live in Brisbane, i know where the CA office is...
the pimply geek may well be within my reach....
Maaaw Haaw Haaw.....
on a serious note though it should be possible to find and replace that voice,
all we need is someone to find it,
(try vercingterox' idx extractor - i saw that in the uploads here i am sure,)
(try the "browse local directory" links on the uploads page)
then identify which ones are screechy boy,
get someone with a deep voice to record new ones and upload them...
B.
(my voice is too "aussie high country" and thus not deep enough)
Out of all the voices I think the spy one is the best,he has a kinda sinister way of speaking.
It was the voices on the campaing map that bothered me the most, esp the romans ones.It was nt just how they said things but also what they where saying, "sir" and "yes sir". when ever I clicked on one it reminded me of marines going through basic training in boot camp.I personally found it annoying enough to turn the speech level down to zero. This mean I play all my games with no voice acting what so ever.I quite liked listening to some of the pre battle speeches somtimes but dont get that now.Its not a really big deal for me as the rest of the game more than compensates for the poor voices or lack of voices in my case.
There are not alot of games out there where the voicing has you saying ,hey thats great voice acting.A fair few of em are just ok,they give you information and niether detract or add to the immersivness.
There are of course some games where the voice acting is about the best thing the game has going for it with little to no gameplay.I will take gameplay over voice acting if that choice has to be made.
Any ways, just so the americans out there dont think I universially hate there accent, one of my favourite games for voicing is Free space 2.The american guy who dose the narration i find extremly compeling.
I also find the movie that is played just b4 you play a barb faction a little spine tingling :)
