View Full Version : Barbarian factions should get a movement bonus.

I really think barbarian factions (Gaul, Britannia, Germania, etc.) should get a movement bonus on the strategic map to represent their superior knowledge of the land and any shortcuts to a destination. This would help make up for their lack of road building capabilities. At least in provinces they own, maybe not in foreign provinces. Alot of the units have good ambushing abilities, but that point is kinda moot with ambushing being for the most part useless right now.
It would definately make things more interesting. As it is now, it's a real pain to cart generals/governors from your capital to outlying provinces in a reasonable amount of time because they only have roads.
What do you guys think?

I like it.
Too bad sacking Rome does'nt expand the winning factions tech tree because of it the Barbs have little chance on holding onto big cities in the long run

It would be insanely unrealistic to do so. The Romans were faster than the barbarians even when they were off road. Only in the forests were the barbarians potentially faster than the Romans.

Well I don't think that the Romans were idiots in their lands either. Plus they had agenst which they sent ahead to spy on the enemy before to see what their land and culture were all about before declaring war. Gaul may have done this too, I don't know - so let's just say that the idea only works if you disregard history.
They're not elves. :p

aye nice idea but not very accurate. Caesar actually owed some of his success in gaul to the fact that his legions could travel faster through gaul then the gauls could. Allowing him to strike when are where he wanted and avoid the larger armies when appropriate.
i do NOT think though that the romans need a movement bonus.

I think if any faction sacks Rome or destroys a faction they should then be able to build one of their units. at least for the barbarian factions who learned to fight roman and were deployed in roman ranks near the end of Rome itself.

But the game timespan does not really cover this...
I don't think that the barbarians were disciplined enough to enjoy faster strategic movement than anyone else gets. Training and discipline made forced marching possible and that is exactly what the Romans had in spades.
