View Full Version : Destroy governor's house during seige so you can build your own?

Has anyone ever done this? - during a seige, while you're taking over the town, try to destroy the governor's building.

I have yet to make seige weapons, because it's easy enough to take over stone-wall cities without them. Are seige weapons immobile? Can they be moved into the town? Are there other more 'regular' units that can destroy buildings?

Destroying the governor's house would cause temporary mayhem in big cities - but it would also let one fairly quickly take care of the Culture Penalty. You'd be able to make your own governor's buildings without resorting to extermination or enslavement. Having your own governor building would give an immediate 20% decrease in Culture Penalty, and also you'd get to the next level where you can build all your own stuff much more quickly, thereby doing away with most of the rest of the penalty much more quickly. But I imagine there'd be hell to pay at first (revolts) in the event of a big city's population having absolutely no (first turn) or quite undersized (subsequent turns) governor's house. It might even take several revolts-plus-retakings, but I would think eventually you'd get where you want. (Or will the multiple revolts halt the progress of anything past the 1-turn governor's house? OR maybe even you can't destroy this building totally?)

One thing I do know is that when you're fighting in a city, you see a "percent damage" for the governor's building, just like all the rest.

Anyway - it's a curious thought. Has anyone tried it? Can seige weapons move, or are there other mobile house wreckers?? ~

Good thought. You should be able to do this. Last night I inadvertantly burned down an Archery range with my Ballistae, and I noticed that you could target the buildings with them. I'm not sure if seige equipment can actually be moved inside the city though, I seem to recall having trouble with that before. If you can get in range of the Governor's palace outside the wall, you might be able to pull it off though. I'm curious to see what happens if you try this.

I didn't, but I think that you just have the building at 100 % damage, not removed from the city (at least, it's how Assassin's sabotage works).

Deserve a try, though.

It seems to me it would be almost as effective to take the city intact, then sell off the buildings you don't want anymore. Less cool buildings on fire stuff, but more profitable.

Also, I haven't read anything definitive from CA about the negative culture effects of conquered-people's buildings in your new Roman town/city. I could understand the temples having a culture impact, but the architecture of the archery range affecting culture seems silly. I don't know yet, and CA doesn't seem to be very helpful or willing to explaining the game mechanics to us

but luckily we don't always have to wait for CA to explain how to use their game...

Link to a Culture Guide done by an .org member who explains a lot about the cultural effects of foreign buildings, especially the gov's house.

And the funny thing is they are built right within the cities walls. and yet they somehow mange to get out the gates and onto the fields. I'm still looking looking for that easter egg. Because somehow there has to be a teleport but only the siege engineers know where they are and they are'nt telling.

I have actually managed to do this. However, it doesn't remove the building from the "built" section, it just shows it as 100% damaged. And since you can't destroy buildings like the governor's villa the effect you are looking for won't occur.

I haven't checked what rebuilding a damaged facility from scratch does for cultural difference. When I completely rebuilt the governor's place surely it would've been in my stylee?

To be fair to CA, I'm fairly certain the guy who did that guide got the information from a CA guy who posted it in this forum.

Thanks for the info, Jug! As soon as Akka said how assassins simply get it 100% damaged, I was thinking "uh oh". Now, I think you've confirmed it. The only thing left is for somebody else who does it, to double-check when they rebuild it - please make a note of your Culture Penalty before and after you hit that Turn button!
