I was just wondering about the search function here.
I couldn't find it first, at the forum mainpage, but in the entrance hall i have a "Search this forum" button.
I thought: "Aha, i can only search "theese Junior patron allowed" threads".
Clicking search gives me this message however: "Tocca, you do not have permission to access this page."

I'm guessing it's because of my (lack of) status here? I looked in the
"New ? Please read this first !" thread, but i couldn't find any info about the searchfunction.

So, i was just wondering. Is the search disabled for junior patrons?
Many of the things i wish to ask are most probably already asked before, and a searchfunction would spare other forum-members from having to read
newbie questions over and over again! ~:)

(Actually, from experience from other forums, it doesn't seem like a searchfunction really have this effect. Many people seem to do like this: Register at a forum. Don't read any threads at all. Ask a question that already is answered at atleast five different places on the first page. Bump the thread if not answered within one hour.) ~D

Anyway, i was just wondering if there's something wrong at my end or not.

Ah, Swede humor ~D

Your thinking is logical, sequential....and correct. As you've observed, most new registerees are not aware of how to use "search". Also, we had a unique occurance this year: the number and depth of searches being conducted brought down the server. Our host demanded that we cut back search use. So we regetfully had to restrict search to Senior Patron and above.

Sorry for the inconvenience. And the "New, read this first" thread is outdated and being worked on. Thanks for that input. It's good to know how it looks to a new guy.

Edit (to add): Knowing all that, we welcome all questions here in the Entrance Hall, repettitive or not. Fire away with your query. Plus posting here (in this flame-free environment) gives us a chance to see you and get you promoted.

Ok, thanks.

"The searches brought down the server"! That's something!
It's a pity that you can't search when you're new, but i fully understand the restriction.

I've found the answer to some of my questions already, and i can probably find some more answer if i keep digging a bit.
I also found three different threads asking about the searchfunction, so if i had just been a little bit more patient i would've gotten that question answered too. ~:)

I'll read some more in the different forums, later on i'll post if there's still things i need to know (very likely) or want help with (very very likely). Maybe i'll even be able to answer someone elses questions (not quite so likely).

We've added Google search to the top of each forum page. Works as well (or better than) the database-intensive one we had. Give it a try.

Great!
Works better? Mmm, well you'll probably get more hits but you'll surely get more nonrelevant hits too. Main thing is to learn HOW to search to get what you want i believe. There are lots of small things one can do to narrow the results. Putting things like: "", and, or...after/before/between words works miracles.

I know that in Google, it's possible to search a specific site on the internet.
This will probably work for the forum too i think. But i don't know if that will put a strain on the forum-server as well? I haven't written how to do it, since that might be a fact.
If it doesn't, i'll explain how to go about it if anyone is interested.
