I have no idea how anyone could get bored, but maybe if you tried some of my tricks. One thing is to play more in flavor of who I am in the game. Read about the ethnic group and its goals and histories. For example as a Barbarian Faction raid and pillage toward Rome. See if you can raze Rome and have fun just burning and marching through places. Lead by example and have your General in the thick of it Carving His way toward that damm Roman Legate, not in the rear like a toga wearer....Or As Carthage or Greek Players strive to control all that is important which is the Med Trade Routes and establishing Settlements and Colonies. Rebuild the Empire of the Pharohs or Alexander. Set different goals such as Income Level....Largest and only Fleet....Play only Occupy, Only Enslave or Only Pillage.....The biggest part is not to play every faction with the same mind set and tactics base. By that I mean if mY Gaul faction loses most of its men each generation in war then that is how it was or if I am a German I try to be more crafty and less texbook. Let the Romans have their three rows of Hastati, Principes, and Triarri...my Gauls put the best up front and center and crash them hard...breaking or being broken..It is more fun to be them and try to play as a Noble In Your Face Brave Screaming Gaul than just the same Roman Type Mindset each game with the only difference being the Culture. Have some fun being Attilla the Scythian in lieu of Attilla the Hun, but play it like a Hunnish Tribe and see how far you can get West and then see how many Scythians are in your Army and how many Mercenaires ie Conquered Folk have joined to keep your Army full up on units....There is plenty to do..If the game can't be tailored then tailor yourself. All my Gauls want to do is hold my territory, take one territory here or there from those who dare attack and rampage down the Roman Boot laying waste to every town and Rome itself. After that maybe will Go see Athens and toast some marshmellows at the Parthenon.
