View Full Version : Screenshots: Win XP viewer can't read TGA files

I was surprised to find this image format wasn't supported by default in the Windows viewer. I did a Google search for freeware TGA viewers and didn't take long to find one.

http://www.fine-view.com

Download size is under 2 Megs.

The author is Japanese and there's no English documentation to speak of but it's pretty self explanatory to use, so this isn't a problem. Also does file conversions for you. The 1024x768x24 TGA screenshots are surprisingly big, in the multi-megabyte range, but a JPEG conversion cuts them down to under 200kB.

No doubt the rest of you have found something similar long ago but I thought I'd post this here in case anyone equally new to MTW was also looking for a screenshot viewer utility.

IrfanView has to be about the most popular graphics file viewer out there.

IrfanView will open just about any graphics file, including *.tga files, and allows you to convert to any other format. Available free from: http://www.irfanview.com/

Thanks Tomcat (and Bret)

Irfanview also showed up on that Google search, about third or fourth on the list, but I just downloaded the first prog I investigated.

Can Irfanview do file conversions in bulk?
That would make it worth an additional download. The one I have will do conversions at the push of a button but only one at a time. I've piles of game screenshots (not just MTW) to get through and batch processing will save me a lot of time.

Yepp, look for "batch conversion" in File menu. There are few things you cannot do with images using irfanview... ;) E.g. you cannot draw them :)

Hi bretwalda,

you answered my question about the screenshot keypress (F2) earlier this evening. I then went and searched for old threads I'd started and found this one, so I dug it up as it contains reference to irfanview and it might be handy for these threads to be placed next to each other in the list.

This was handy for me, as much as anyone else, since I lost my second HDD in two years only a few months ago and have had to reinstall all sorts of things all over again and this thread helped me find the irfanview homepage. I've had to re-download irfanview just now and the funny thing is that it took me longer to scroll to 'UK' for the download server (on TUCOWS) than to download the file itself.

I am glad that we could solve two problems in such a short time! Have fun and play hard

Ahhh....Finally, my post in the Alchemist Lab has been answered.....

Also, apart from a TGA viewer, where can I find an editor and viewer for LBM files?!

edyzmedieval,

Just curious; what was it you asked that we've answered - the stuff about viewing TGA files?

I jsut checked the ReadMe for irfanview and LBM isn't on the list of supported filetypes but I guess that if someone dropped the author a line he could get to working on it. There must be 40-odd files types he's already sorted out so another one wouldn't hurt.

After that, I typed "LBM to BMP" into Google, with the quotes so it searched for the whole phrase and guess what? The only entry it found was this - it's only a Guild thread :laugh4:

https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/showthread.php?t=30806

I've not stopped to actually read this other thread myself, so let us know if it's any help. I've no idea what LBM files are or where you're getting them from.

Edit: I've now checked that thread and it's actually about a program which was under development but that was in 2003 and it's not clear what became of it in the end. Sorry if this isn't at all helpful.

Yeah, that's what has been answered.... A viewer for TGA....
LBM files are important MTW files. Search in the directory and you will find everywhere LBM files....

And thanks for the link, this might be the answer....
