I'm tempted to purchase some of the games and expansions (again) in Japanese, but am a little worried about running Japanese software on a UK PC, amongst other things... Since the older games are now bargain-bin products, I figure playing them might prove a fun and relatively cheap way for me practice my Japanese skills. However, I have a number of concerns...

Availability: Are Japanese versions of the games and expansions available? I've only heard of a Japanese version of Shogun to date...

Speech: Is the speech in Japanese versions in English or Japanese? Is it possible to change between the two? (Useful if I ever get confused, or if I start missing Sean Pertwee's voice!)

Text: As above. Also, would my computer have any problem reading the text (sometimes it likes Japanese, sometimes it doesn't...)

Compatibility: Would the software even be compatible with a UK machine running (I assume) a UK version of Windows XP?

Sorry, I tend to get paranoid about this kind of thing... Computers are very fickle creatures ;)

I'm not sure anybody here will be able to help, but if you can it would be really good... It's either that or ask CA...

In my (US) version of S:TW, the language was toggle-able in the option menu. I used English for a few months, then switched to Japanese for the 'atmosphere'.

Can't speak for certain about Asian copies of games playing OK on UK machines. But I've had the opposite experience work out OK. I sent an extra copy of Mongol Invasion (US version) to an Aussie colleague (different DVD region); it played with no problem.

Japanese text should work out OK; if any problems, I would pick up MS Japanese language support download from their Windows Update site.

Not precisely easing your mind, but I hope that's helpful.

Actually, I've already got the Japanese text support for when my fiancee uses the computer - but I've still experienced much Japanese software that won't display properly ~:(

Your info is helpful, thank you, but indeed I am too paranoid still! It does indeed seem the best approach will be to ask the guys at CA. Unfortunately, by the time I get a response I will be back in the UK and getting what I want will be a little harder. Still - some things are worth waiting for ~:)
