how about modding a middle east total war? IT would take place like 2000 years before rome, with sargon the great and people. youed be able to take over babylon and things. and you could play like the assyrians and all those other guys.. just an idea!

My history's not that great, but I'm a little curious as to whether or not there's much choice in units that far back?

I haven't been able to play RTW all that much (*pats struggling computer*) but it strikes me as though the variety of units available to any given faction is rather lower than in MTW. I'm not sure if there are more or less unit types overall. I don't blame this on CA at all - it sounds perfectly realistic when you think about it...

As military tactics develop over the years, there becomes a greater diversity in the types of fighting units - specialisation is a good way to field a strong armer at lower cost. Modern warfare seems to have actually reversed this trend, but that's more of an aside...

So, if you go back 1,000 years from MTW, you have less units. Sounds right to me. If you go back another 2,000 years, you have even less units, no?

Obviously the variety of units is only one factor in how good such a game would be - but could you imagine playing a game with, say, only eight types of unit per faction?

Actually, STW didn't have that many more ;)

If you could share any more details on the history of the period, I'd be interested to hear them... I must admit I'm more than a little curious where CA will take this brilliant series next :book:

Naw I dont think that'd be any good personally. Rome should so it all for us. ~:)

My only thing is, now that they just made the best total war game ever, what will be after this one in a few years?! So your idea very well could come true, we wont know for a long long time; I'm personally satisified with what I've got infront of me, its more than enough to keep me occupied for many hours, cough, days, cough, months to come; as in, total time played lol!

Well, I always said MTW was perfect, and there's every reason to believe they've gone and improved upon that! :)

That said, Rome strikes me as the definitive historical period for a strategy game of this nature - I wasn't surprised at all when I heard it would be the next title in the line. To be able to find any more worthy a period in human history currently strikes me as impossible, although as I've said before I'm no historian. My mind is truly boggled! I'm sure there are other historical possibilities, and I've no doubt CA will find more ways to add gameplay to them that might should them better than RTW, despite the instant boost gained merely by being set in a Roman setting. I also wonder if they might be considering a move towards fantasy or even sci-fi for sequels - I imagine in doing so, they would lose an aspect that attracts many current fans, but replace it with an aspect that would bring many new ones.

Yet despite my opinions of the boosting effect of the Roman setting, I still feel somehow that RTW is a step down from MTW - I'm not saying it's worse, and I've certainly not had enough opportunity to judge. Nor am I criticising it for bugs, imbalances or the like. I guess this once again stems from the point about the Romans being less advanced than their descendants, hence for example there being no gunpowder. I also just have this feeling that attacking a city will never quite be the same as attacking a citadel...

If you're doing war in the Middle East, it would start around the Sumerian civilization around 4000 B.C. and continue non-stop until modern times.

So when it gets close to modern times what year would i be able to train suicide bombers and terrorists

Fortunately the existing Total War mechanics do not allow for campaigns over such a length of time, with such a change in technology.

And judging from where this thread is going, long may it stay that way! ~D
