View Full Version : Most irritating enemy faction?

I just though I should bring this up. Playing as the Egyptians I found that the Seleucids just won't go down no matter what I try. Their army balance is just too good- to defeat them you need a very balanced army as well which the Egyptians do not have until quite a late stage of the game.
The Scythed Chariots are overpowed IMO. I had a 7-star general with a huge and well valoured army. I crushed a lot of the enemy captains, but got massacred (well I suppose it is a bit over-exaggurating, but still) every time the enemy army had scythed chariots in them. Many say Scythed Chariots are underpowered, but I strongly disagree.
Anyway, just vote on who you think is the most irritating, backstabbing, least diplomacy-friendly, or just hard-to-put-down faction out there. Choose wisely... and make sure to explain why you voted.
I have had a consistently horrendous time on the campaign map with the Spanish/Iberians, whether I'm the Gauls, the Julii, the Scipii, the Carthaginians, etc etc. They very often don't even give me the option to ally with them, they revoke Trade Rights at whimsical intervals, they attack my allies but never me, they seek out and attack lone ships. In battles I rarely have trouble with them, but for the rest of the game they're the foulest pillocks imaginable.
But I'm sure most of them are nice people ~:)

Strangely enough, I don't think I've ever come face to face with the Spanish... although they did stupidly attack my huge fleet as the Julii. A little way into the war I quit the campaign and started a new one, I was getting quite bored of it.
I hate all clans that use tons of horse archers. In castle sieges it is very frustrating to get them. They keep bounce back and fourth from the town center, shooting all the way. I wish I had some shotgun... :furious3:
Fortunately I don't really see AI use a lot of them, though. I would just blame (vote) Parthia. ~D

Without a doubt egypt, if u cant counter them early they grow into a superpower with seemingly endless armies. Then theres also those archer chariots they have, very mean units those.Playing as them is also the last thing i would do cause theres not much of a challenge.

Egypt here too. In the mid-game playing with seleucia, they brought armies composed exclusively of desert cavs, archers and chariots. Too fast and sneaky for my hoplites and pikemen. It took me a LOt of mercs to take them down.
After you get the trick of fighting them there isnt much problem.
But they are one of the hardest ones.
Numidia is also a sneaky one.
Most iritating, dont have one. Most stupid is Brutii & Scippi, sending so many Hastati that always run away and are run down by calvery, by the thousands. Their also pretty annoying.
egypt and those goddamn bowmen XD

In my game as Sythia - The Germans who held me in Russia for 80 years
As Julii - Britions just because they never let me land on Brittion, I only wanted to talk...
As Carthage - Numidia just because of how fricking huge Numidia is
As Armenians - Selucids and Egyptions tie because they allied against me after THEY attacked one of my fleets

No matter what my most irritating faction is the romans, I always end up fighting at least two of them at once. Currently I am waging a two front war against the Scipii (North Africa) and Brutii (Greece, Italia), it takes me hours to capture a settlement in each area. Hint for those annoyed by the Seluecids, if you start on their border blitz them. The Seluecids start the game off weak, they have alkmost no way to counter archers or cavalry. So if oyu are Egypt what you should do is have light infantry hit the front of their phalanxes and then charge the rear with cavalry or just use archers to kill them from range. As the Britons the Julii have kept me from making significant gains in Italia because the Britons do not have heavy enough troops. If you are on the border of a faction that can become extremely strong mid to late game the best strategy is to force a decisive winner takes all showdown. Do not have a cautious game plan throw all of your troops into the grinder, make risky decisions on the battlefield, bottom line don't bleed the tough factions slowly decapitate them and burn their corpse. Beat them until there is nothing left to beat. Never allow your economy or population to come in the way of your military's need for a quick and brutal conclusion to a conflict. If you find yourself thinking, "But if I lose I might not recover..." you probably have the right idea!

I really hate factions using elephants or horse archers. With these two units, perhaps only 150 mm anti-tank cannon and MG42 machine gun can help me out.

Whoa, Egypt seems popular... I can guess why though.

Damn Macedon, I say! Nothing stops a successful campaign quicker than a plague.
My main breadth of playing so far has been with the Greek Cities, and as them, the Macedonians are lightweights, the seluecids are entrenched but mediocre, and the Brutii are a paper tiger, but the Scipii always seem to foil me and grind my advance to a halt.
So, The Macedonians are annoying and hated for their plague, and the scipii for their resilience. Also, of course, playing as a Roman Faction, the most annoying enemies are your own allies. There's nothing worse than bringing up the rescources and recruits for a campaign to take a juicy territory, only to have it stolen out from under your nose by an ally you can't attack.
Of course, the Senate is also a bastard device of the devil for zeroing in on any faction I want to cultivate good relations with and then commanding me to the warpath.

I think it depends a lot on who you play. As Armenia, Seleucids and Egypt are very annoying. They just won't take my peace offers. Parthians demanded 3 cities, but then settled for trade, map and 1000D. Pontus won't hear of peace either, but I've got them walled in. Eggies and SE are swarming me with chariots and pharaos elephant desert whatsits. I'll wote for Egypt, since I actually attacked SE first. GC are annoying too, with their bribing habit. I've never been annoyed by Scythians or Thracians.

Egypt is annoying and irritating anyway, just because of their pharaonic buildup and their stupendous unit lineup (even though by playing the Total Realism Mod I don't have to live with the stupid names anymore - I do have to live with the ridiculisly overpowered "native" units though) they are way too overpowered in vanilla RTW, their levy units are better than most factions top notch units, they attack the Seleucids out of the blue, even if they were allied for only a couple of turns (you can tell I've played a couple of Seleucid campaigns, can't you?) they bring in army after army after army... did I mention I hate the "pharaonic colour" of this faction? :furious3:
Also, when playing as the Greek Cities, I find the Brutii (allthough rather weak) extremely irritating. They will land a smallish army in Athens every other turn, besiege, get trashed, repeat the next turn and over and over again... I really hate this.

Egypt, as they seem to be able to reach 15 provinces fairly quickly - and defeat the Seleucids. A problem if I've got a slow starting faction and I want to play a short game.

egypt - hands down! they are always annoying to fight and their citys are prone to revolt all the time.

Egypt - just because they're so historically wrong.

Egypt...
They are able to spam armies and have money to burn. Plus those Desert Axement with their "Armoured Skirts!" really annoy me.
The next most irritating faction would have to be anything Roman!!

Gauls annoy me, they breed like rabbits and will never stop sending huge stacks of inf armies at you heh

Germans. They have too good units, which, unfortunately for them, causes me to take pre-emptive action against them early on. They would surely attack me anyway.
As a disgusting off-topic, I love the Gauls. They keep sending huge stacks of useless infantry, like warbands. chop chop :smash:

Yeah, it's got to be the Egyptians - those pesky archer units, and chariots, and don't get me started on those axemen!
Although the Gauls, as we all know, are unreasonably hairy.
