Ep I was pretty good, Ep II was just plain awful. The originals were three of the best movies ever made though...

I loved the original trilogy. Empire is my favorite, then Jedi. I love Muppets, so mabye that's why. But also, the effects of A New Hope are a bit shakey at times with delayed lightsaber noises and stuff.
I can't decide which one I dislike more, episode 1 or 2... 1 had Anakin as a stupid boy who ticked me off, while 2 had him as an idiot who can't act. I might go with 2 for seeing more of Natalie Portman. Wee! ~:cheers:

You know you're going to hate it, right? There's no way in heck Mr. Lucas can make a movie that's innovative enough, visually impressive enough, or deep enough to satisfy people like us. It's too mainstream and not like watching Star Wars for the first time as a child. That experience cannot be duplicated. It's a part of growing older. I'm also convinced that from the games I've bought and the stuff I watch and read that I am a spoiled, avant-garde snob. "Cult" this, "underrated" that, "best game nobody played", you can't name it, I know of it. There's no other feeling like you're part of an elite, esoteric clique. My point? I think that to a point, many of us here fit this mold too and enjoy attacking the SW series to gain that elitism buzz.

This post is almost an attack and I'm kinda sorry about that. I need to stop reading TTLG, that place pisses me off.

A few months back, I downloaded a synopsis of the new Star Wars movie script. I liked it. It looks good.

I think the movie will tie up all the loose ends in a logical, exciting, and emotionally satisfying way. At the very least, it's jam-packed with light-sabery goodness. :duel:

Of course, the real danger is that Lucas will forget to write anything reasonable for his actors to say, or provide any direction to help their performances. One thing is clear from the prequels: acting in front of a bluescreen for an entire movie brings out wooden performances. Queen Amigdala and Whiny Skywalker have both given decent performances in other movies.

I think Lucas is just so into the technology, and so emotionally removed from romance at this point in his life, that he just wasn't able to write and direct a believable love story. Lucas has admitted that the only reason he decided to do the prequels was because he wanted to play with the new digital technology that's now available. I guess his personal life has consisted of being Mr. Mom to his kids after a "long time ago" divorce. These factors probably had a lot to do with the relative goofieness of the last two movies.

For me, New Hope and Empire Strikes Back were the gems of the series. Return of the Jedi didn't quite live up to the other two (Ewoks, etc). Both Attack of the Clowns and Phantom Menace are worth seeing primarily for their rocking action sequences.

I agree! All three of the originals were classics, with Empire being the best Star Wars movie yet. Of course the prequels thus far pale in comparison to the originals.

I think part of the problem with the prequels is bad casting, Hayden Christiansen being the most notable example. I'm sorry but this guy isn't believable at all as the future Darth Vader....besides being wooden he's a wuss. Jedi or not I could kick the crap out of him. ~D
Was it really that hard to find someone slightly intimidating and with half decent acting skills to play Anakin Skywalker?

I recently watched all 5 films on DVD and it was an eye opening experience to say the least. The original trilogy held up well and only the Ewoks and special edition changes had me wincing. The prequels, oh boy. I used to like them, mostly. There have always been quite a few things about the prequels I didn't like much, Jarjar for example, but ouch.

Both films have long, pointless boring bits that need cutting. The best example of this is that entire droid factory 'I wanna be a video game' section at the end of EPII.

The cringe factor is very high, especially little orphan Anne and his amazing accidental destruction of the droid control ship.

There are so many characters I really do hate, especially Amidala. I hate her, I never liked her but now I really, truly and without exception hate her. I can’t wait until they kill her in EPIII and I hope she dies in agony, assuming the incredibly wooden, montone Portman can do agony, which I doubt. Anakin (older, not the boy) and Obi Wan are the only prequel characters I like, and that is despite their own bad moments.

The humour is often terrible; it's far cruder than in the originals. The dialogue is cheese in so many places. To be fair so is the dialogue in the original trilogy but somehow it seems so much worse in the new films.

Do not ask the frog about EPII's love story. I thought it was terrible when I first saw the film. It gets worse with each repetition.

The entire end lightsabre duel in EPII is crap. Obi Wan and Anakin against Dooku is short, dark and kind of dull. Yoda, oh I do hate Yoda! It looks crap; he jumps around and makes stupid noises - it's like seeing someone being attacked by a flea! Yoda supposedly fights again in EPIII, oh joy.

I do still see potential for the story in a 'it could be worse' kind of way, and unlike many other people I am not bothered by whiny Anakin. The lightsabre battles in EPI are great. I like the stylish clean universe a bit more than the clunky used universe, but that's mostly because I like the new Jedi robes :tongueg:

Surprisingly I do have some hope for EPIII.

i've come to terms with star wars. i was recently watching dvds for episodes A new hope, Empire and Retun. and in them at least, lucas pokes fun of the whole frachise calling yoda kermit and chewie, a big dog. i'm sure a lot of it is hindsight but he was peddling the whole series as just a pulp sci fi serial thats supposed to have chessy dialogues and things that don't quite fit right.

his overall theme seemed to be that star wars is supposed to be b-movie material but because of the technical expertise [special effects] and universal mysticism [the force] most people take it more seriously than they are supposed to. in that context, the cheesy dailogues, the more unrealisti
c action sequences, the plot holes all make more sense. personally, i think he's justifying all this in hindsight, and he might simply not have the artistic ability to make masterpieces, but he probably takes the star wars franchise less seriously than most of us do.

Since Return of the Jedi it has become painfully obvious that Lucas never intended this franchise to appeal to a mature, older audience. The fact that the first two SW flicks appealed to so many people of different age groups was the result of excellent pacing (editing), direction, special effects and extraordinary music and ALOT of luck! People forgot they were watching shallow pulp sci-fi flicks and enjoyed the ride.

The only saving grace of the recent SW flicks is the effects and the great light saber duel in Phantom Menace. Everything else is garbage.

When Lucas is killed by a really upset nerd for destroying his favourite sci-fi triology, then maybe a new director will remake them all to a much higher standard. I mean just look at the Battlestar Gallactica mini-movie. It's a mini-movie and it was to a vastly higher standard than Episode I or II!

I think Lucas should have just produced them, instead of directing I II and III. There are some good actors in the films, but with a director like Lucas none of them exactly shine do they. Which is a shame because Lucas could direct pretty well once - StarWars and American Graffiti - I just don't think he gives a damn anymore.
