I capture Crete using a diplomat and bribing rebels(I'm Seleucid). I only have 1 unit militia hoplites and no general there.
I'm in war with Greeks , there navy is massive and Crete is well away from any possible help.
The Greeks land 3-4k of good quality troops and 2 generals, I think hmmm ..doesn't look good for the health of those lonely hoplites.
So I give the place away to Egpyt(my ally) . The Greek army just sits there turn after turn, costing their employers a bomb, neither attacking or doing anything (except I suspect frequenting the local taverns and getting a suntan).
Meanwhile over on the mainlands the poor Greeks are getting hammered.
I guess the ai script is stuck as this Greek army can't fulfill its mission, but it must be really messing up the Greeks overall chances.
Anyone have any comments or similar experiences.
I see large armies being left in useless positions while factions are getting hammered elsewhere all the time.
I have even seen the greeks with a full stack left standing near Sparta while it was under siege by the Brutii with a half stack. I don't know if the ai thought that they couldn't win the battle and so never tried or what.
If the AI sees that it can't win a battle with the closest stack does it not even try to fight? Then if there is no better army to bring along they resign themselves to losing? Seems like the stupid ai works this way.
I've seen the A.I attack islands many of times and then take there stack away when the mission is done and usually leaves 3 units behind.
Since you gave the city away that army no longer has a mission. The other problem is this army is probably not causing a transgression problem so they do'nt get an incentive to leave, funny how the A.I is immune to transgression I think. As if I had an army parked in neutral territory that long it'd get attacked.
Heh this is interesting, players can fouled AIs if you can figured it out. It would be strange but this can drain their income badly.
I guess AIs need more scripting.

Last time I took Crete I only had a couple of units to hold it. Very next turn, the Greeks landed with two stack of hoplites and their faction heir. Wanting to see just what was going to happen, and not being able to re-inforce because of Greeks boats cluttering-up the entire area, I waited. Nothing happened. Turn after turn, nothing happened. Years went by. I was finally able to snuff most of the Greek provinces, but still no attack and no way to re-inforce. It was MOST annoying, but helped destroy the Greeks. Can't remember now if they just "disolved" when I took their last province, or if I bought them when their faction heir consumed the fixed time period of his shelf-life. Makes you wonder why they even landed if the AI had no intention of attacking--and we were at war.
in a couple of games half of the British army just stands on Moderni Ireland :dizzy2:

Playing as the julii, the gauls have only got two large armies left, and they just leave them sitting in britany and spain, while the rest of there country is battered and conquered. It's so stupid!!!
